Job Title
Provides communication assistance and American Sign Language interpretation for patients, families and staff.
Essential Functions- Provides Accurate Interpretation:
Facilitates clear communication between patients, families, and staff in-person, over video or telephone, using appropriate communication methods for developmental age and mental condition. - Cultural Sensitivity:
Demonstrates cultural awareness and provides unbiased and accurate interpretation, following role boundary guidelines. - Adheres to Legal and Ethical Standards:
Follows Intermountain policies, and adheres to Title VI of the Civil Rights Act, Title III of the ADA, Section 1557 of the ACA, the National Code of Ethics for Healthcare Interpreters published by the National Council of Interpreting in Healthcare and the NAD-RID Code of Professional Conduct. - Effective Time Management and Record Keeping:
Manages time efficiently, responds promptly to interpretation requests, and communicates with various teams to ensure timely service. Keeps accurate records of interpretation encounters. - Tech Proficiency:
Uses computers, software, and internet tools for documentation, data entry, and communication purposes. - Supports Staff Training:
Assists in identifying, training and onboarding Qualified Bilingual Staff (QBS), interpreters, and interns. May facilitate bilingual fluency assessments. - Enhances Patient Understanding:
Troubleshoots communication barriers for individuals with limited English proficiency or who are deaf or hard-of-hearing and provides educational resources to staff on compliance with language assistance policies. - Coordinates interpretation assignments with suppliers as needed.
- Collaborates with Leadership and Units:
Acts as a liaison between Language Services leadership and assigned units, ensuring effective communication, resource needs, and seamless service delivery.

- Pay Range: $22.98 - $35.00. Pay is determined based on direct professional interpreting experience.

- Advanced Medical Terminology in source and target language(s).
- Ability to interpret consecutively, simultaneously and perform sight translations with a high degree of accuracy.
- Demonstrate linguistic and cultural competence.
- Works effectively in a fast paced, high-pressure environment.
- National Interpreter Certification issued by Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf (RID), or if in Utah, Professional Level Certification provided by the Division of Services of the Deaf and Hard of Hearing:
Utah Interpreter Program (UIP).
- Bachelor's Degree. Education must be obtained from an accredited institution.
- Completion of a college-level human anatomy and physiology course.
- Completion of a college-level medical terminology course.
- Two years of experience as a professional medical interpreter.
- Experience working with CDI.
- Spanish language fluency.
- Ongoing need for employee to see and read information, labels, documents, monitors, identify equipment and supplies, and be able to assess customer needs.
- Frequent interactions with providers, colleagues, customers, patients/clients and visitors that require employee to verbally communicate as well as hear and understand spoken information, needs, and issues quickly and accurately.
- Manual dexterity of hands and fingers to manipulate complex and delicate supplies and equipment with precision and accuracy. This includes frequent computer use for typing, accessing needed information, etc.
- For roles requiring driving:
Expected to drive a vehicle which requires sitting, seeing and reading signs, traffic signals, and other vehicles.
