Land of Lincoln Legal Aid seeks a Managing Attorney in our Southern Regional Office in Carbondale, Illinois. Land of Lincoln provides free civil legal services to low-income individuals in 65 counties in Illinois. We are committed to seeking justice for those whose voices might not be heard; to empower individuals to advocate for themselves; and to make positive changes in the communities we serve.

The Managing Attorney will manage the day-to-day operation of a regional office serving a multi-county region, including its staff, private bar programs, and multiple grants. This position supervises staff to ensure the efficient and effective operation of the office and the delivery of professional and high-quality legal services.

Responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Actively participate in community outreach and education
  • Build and maintain relationships with community organizations
  • Actively listen to community residents about legal needs and develop strategies to address them on an individual and systemic basis
  • Collaborate with administrative staff to administer regional office operations and program-wide projects
  • Provide proactive supervision for attorneys, support staff, law students, and other staff
  • Other duties as assigned
Qualifications

Qualifications:

  • Minimum of seven (7) years of legal experience and seven (7) years of supervisory/management experience
  • Demonstrated legal and managerial competence, including the ability to oversee regional office operations
  • Proven experience recruiting, hiring, supervising, and developing staff
  • Strong ability to communicate and collaborate effectively with clients, the judiciary, private bar, funders, and agency staff
  • Demonstrated commitment to the representation of low-income individuals; prior legal services experience preferred
  • Licensed to practice law in Illinois or eligible for admission through reciprocity
  • Demonstrated ability to build effective working relationships with individuals from diverse social, economic, and racial/ethnic backgrounds
  • Excellent verbal, written, analytical, and organizational skills
  • Highly motivated, with the ability to work independently and collaboratively as part of a team
  • Strong commitment to justice and equity

Special Working Conditions and Demands:

  • Applicants must have reliable transportation, valid driver’s license, and car insurance
  • Reliable home broadband internet sufficient to support remote work meetings, court and video conference hearings, as well as remote meetings/events with community partners
Pay scale and benefits

Pay scale and benefits

Compensation
:$101,000 - $145,000 (depending on experience). Excellent insurance and retirement benefits; excellent leave benefits. Land of Lincoln is a 501(c)(3) non-profit and is an eligible employer for the public service loan forgiveness programs.
