Job Overview:
We're seeking a reliable, detail-oriented Paralegal or Legal Assistant to assist with the preparation, organization, and support of an alimony modification case. This is a part-time, contract position that can be done remotely, with flexible hours to accommodate your current work schedule or other contract engagements.
You will work directly with an individual (self-represented) who is defending himself in an alimony modification proceeding. The main focus of your work will be legal document preparation, scheduling, research, and ensuring that filings comply with California family law procedures.
Key Responsibilities:
- Draft, proofread, and organize court documents (motions, affidavits, responses) related to alimony modification.
- Ensure all documents comply with California family law guidelines and local court rules.
- Maintain digital files, track deadlines, and organize case-related documents.
- Create and manage checklists to keep the process on schedule.
- Conduct legal research and compile relevant information (case law, statutes, local court rules).
- Gather financial data, statements, and evidence needed for the alimony modification process.
- Assist in scheduling court dates, mediation sessions, and client meetings.
- Coordinate communication between the client and any involved legal professionals.
- Provide regular updates on status, upcoming deadlines, and next steps.
- Advise on document requirements and best organizational practices (
Note:
You will not provide legal advice but will support the self-represented client with procedural guidance and administrative tasks).
Qualifications:
- Paralegal certificate, relevant coursework in paralegal/legal studies, or prior experience as a Legal Assistant.
- Experience in California family law or past involvement in family court proceedings.
- Familiarity with the Torrance Courthouse in Los Angeles, California, including local filing procedures, judicial preferences, and court-specific rules.
- Strong knowledge of California family court rules and procedures.
- Excellent written communication and proofreading skills.
- Highly organized with the ability to manage multiple deadlines.
- Proficient in using cloud-based tools (e.g., Google Drive, Dropbox) and MS Office/Google Docs.
- Discretion and respect for confidentiality are essential.
