The Office of the Appellate Defender (OAD) is the second oldest institutional provider of appellate representation in New York City, serving clients for over 37 years. Dedicated to public defense, racial equity, and access to justice, OAD supports clients convicted of felony offenses in Manhattan and the Bronx. The organization emphasizes client‑centered, trauma‑informed advocacy, grounded in the belief in the humanity and dignity of all individuals.

OAD is a compassionate and collaborative community committed to addressing the intersection of poverty and injustice.

Role Description

This is a full‑time hybrid role based in New York, NY, with flexibility for some remote work. The Senior Staff Attorney will represent individuals in appellate and post‑conviction cases, provide expert legal advice and guidance, and engage in legal research and writing. Responsibilities include handling appeals, supervising junior attorneys and law interns, negotiating on behalf of clients, and advocating against systemic inequities in the criminal justice system.

The attorney will also contribute to training and development initiatives within the organization and participate in projects aimed at promoting public defense and social justice.

Qualifications
  • Strong expertise in Law, particularly in criminal defense or appellate practice
  • A solid understanding of Labor and Employment Law and its application
  • Proficiency in providing sound Legal Advice and the ability to offer guidance to clients and colleagues
  • Advanced Research and Negotiation skills
  • Commitment to social justice, access to justice, and racial equity
  • Excellent oral and written advocacy skills
  • Juris Doctor (JD) degree and admission to practice law in the State of New York
  • Experience supervising junior attorneys or legal staff is a plus
