Location is flexible within Alberta; however, periodically may be asked to work in other AFSC branches. Travel in these circumstances will be reimbursed according to AFSC’s Employee and Board of Directors’ Expense Policy.
Summary of the RoleThe Legal Counsel provides expert legal advice and strategic guidance to AFSC across a broad range of legal, privacy, and access matters. As a trusted advisor, this role ensures risk-informed decision making while protecting AFSC’s legal, regulatory, and reputational interests. This position operates as a general practitioner supporting corporate initiatives, appeals, litigation, compliance, and privacy governance.
What will your growth opportunities look like in this role?You’ll gain exposure to executive decision-making, enterprise-wide risk strategy, and complex legal matters impacting Alberta’s agriculture industry. This role offers opportunities to deepen expertise in administrative law, privacy and access legislation, appeals management, procurement, and corporate governance while collaborating closely with senior leaders and cross‑functional teams.
What will you be responsible for?- Providing practical, risk‑informed legal advice across administrative law, contracts, employment, procurement, lending, security, and legislative compliance.
- Reviewing, drafting, and negotiating contracts, agreements, policies, and legal documents.
- Advising on appeals, representing AFSC in proceedings, and overseeing external legal counsel.
- Supporting privacy and access functions including Privacy Impact Assessments (PIAs), breach investigations, and information requests.
- Advising on corporate initiatives and ensuring alignment with legislative and regulatory requirements.
- Monitoring legal developments and identifying emerging risks that may impact AFSC.
- LLB or J.D. and eligibility to be an active member of the Law Society of Alberta.
- Minimum two years of experience providing broad‑based legal advice (administrative, contract, employment, privacy, real estate or litigation support preferred).
- Demonstrated ability to provide practical advice that supports strong, risk‑informed business decisions.
- Exceptional analytical, drafting, negotiation, and communication skills.
- Ability to manage multiple complex matters in a fast‑paced, high‑volume environment.
- Professionalism, discretion, and sound independent judgment when handling sensitive information.
