Job Description
The Oregon Department of Justice seeks an attorney experienced in probate estates, trust administration, guardian ships and conservatorships to join the Civil Recovery Section of the Civil Enforcement Division. The position is based in Salem with remote work options and occasional travel to Portland. Civil Recovery attorneys represent the state in probate and protective proceedings and in a broad plaintiff‑side civil litigation practice for all state agencies, boards and commissions.
Responsibilities- Represent state agencies in guardianship, conservator, personal representative and creditor roles in estate proceedings, trust litigation and Medicaid estate recovery actions.
- Handle probate work and other Civil Recovery cases, including claims arising from contracts, damage to state property, fraud and over payments, injunctive relief and real property disputes.
- Collaborate with attorneys and non‑lawyers, communicate directly with clients, manage client relationships and participate in multi‑party settlement negotiations.
- Active membership in good standing with the Oregon State Bar at the time of appointment.
- At least three years of experience working as an attorney.
- Superior analytical, advocacy, research, verbal communication and writing skills.
- Strong work ethic and collaborative work history with lawyers and non‑lawyers.
- Experience communicating directly with clients and managing client relationships.
- Demonstrated commitment to diversity, equity and an inclusive working environment.
- Willingness and availability to travel throughout the state for court appearances and other case‑related work, including overnight stays.
- At least five years of probate experience in Oregon, including representation of personal representatives, creditors, guardians and/or conservators.
- Working knowledge of Oregon estate, trust, guardianship and conservatorship law.
- Probate litigation experience in Oregon state court.
- Non‑probate civil litigation experience in Oregon state or federal court.
- Experience negotiating and resolving claims brought in civil actions, including multi‑party settlement negotiations.
