Founded in 2019 by Doug Seaton, a long‑time Minnesota labor and employment attorney, Upper Midwest Law Center (UMLC) initiates pro‑freedom litigation to protect against government overreach, special interest agendas, Constitutional violations, and public union corruption and abuses. UMLC is a center‑right, non‑profit, public‑interest law firm that provides free legal representation to individuals and businesses affected by these issues.

About the RoleThe Upper Midwest Law Center is seeking a Senior Litigation Attorney to join us in our suburban Minneapolis, MN office. We are pursuing a highly experienced, innovative, and detail‑oriented senior attorney with a love for liberty and the rule of law to spearhead multiple cases, handle witness interviews, preparation, depositions, discovery, motion practice and trials, manage their docket, write pleadings and briefs, argue cases, and guide junior‑level attorneys.
UMLC wants to put your passion to use to help more people in Minnesota and the upper Midwest harmed by government overreach, public sector union abuse, deprivations of First Amendment speech, religious liberty, and other U.S. and state constitutional rights, and more.
- Brainstorms and spearheads new cases, with Board approval, critical to the Upper Midwest Law Center’s mission.
- Conducts research and interviews clients and witnesses.
- Drafts pleadings, including complaints, petitions, etc.
- Prepares and responds to written discovery and conducts and defends depositions.
- Drafts motion papers and briefs in both state and federal trial and appellate courts.
- Argues hearings before both state and federal trial and appellate courts.
- Interacts with media regarding cases and issues.
- Works with law clerks and other attorneys in management of workloads and cases.
- Works with and under the direction of the President and General Counsel, as well as other attorneys as required by project.
- Bachelor’s degree and Juris Doctorate (JD) degree from an accredited law school and active bar membership in Minnesota or able to join the Minnesota bar by motion based on experience or MBA/UBE score (see Rule 7 at https://(Use the "Apply for this Job" box below).).
- Minimum of 6 years of experience with a strong background in litigation.
- Excellent communication, negotiation, and interpersonal skills with a proven ability to excel in a fast‑paced environment and collaborate effectively across teams.
- Ability to synthesize complex legal and technical information into actionable insights for non‑legal audiences and donors.
- Proficiency with legal software (e.g., Clio).
- Strong analytical, problem‑solving, and strategic thinking capabilities with demonstrated ability to exercise sound judgment in ambiguous situations.
- Ability to travel up to 10%.
- Preferred experience leading other attorneys.
