Compensation
Annual Salary Range: $74,786 – $99,640.
Work LocationUp to four days of remote work per week is allowed.
Position SummaryOffice of General Counsel seeks a highly motivated, analytical, detail-oriented paralegal to coordinate and respond to California Public Records Act requests, under the supervision of an Assistant General Counsel, and to provide other legal and administrative support tasks.
Key Responsibilities- Draft and send responses to public records requests, ensuring compliance with CPRA and stating applicable exemptions.
- Communicate with requestors to clarify document identification and interpret requests.
- Collaborate with State Bar offices to gather records and guide them in locating responsive documents.
- Independently review documents to determine exemptions, red actions, and consistency with CPRA and State Bar Act.
- Research eligible exemptions and stay abreast of changes to CPRA and related legislation.
- Organize records and maintain accurate documentation of request status to support backup coverage.
- Educate and advise staff on CPRA obligations and procedures.
- Assist with subpoena and discovery compliance, including reviewing requests, gathering documents, drafting responses, and tracking deadlines.
- Support responses to government claims and related deadline tracking.
- Conduct document review, analysis, and organization for litigation, audits, investigations, or regulatory matters.
- Assist with contract management: drafting standard terms, tracking status, and maintaining files.
- Provide litigation support: case management, litigation tracking.
- Assist with general support on projects or assignments as directed by OGC attorneys, applying State Bar policies and procedures.
- Perform other related duties consistent with the general level of the position.
- Bachelor’s degree or equivalent work experience in a relevant field.
- Minimum of two years’ experience as a paralegal.
- Certification of completion of an approved paralegal program.
- Completion of required continuing legal education: four hours of legal ethics classes every three years and four hours of general law classes every two years.
- Demonstrated experience handling records requests under CPRA or FOIA in a government setting.
- Strong judgment, discretion, and ability to work independently.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite, document management systems, and tracking tools.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Effective prioritization and time‑management.
- Analytical mindset with attention to detail.
- Knowledge of public record laws and CPRA regulations.
- Travel by air and automobile as required.
