Staff Attorney

The Staff Attorney is responsible for researching, analyzing, and developing legal and policy solutions to protect and expand voting rights for all Nebraskans. The Staff Attorney may assist in municipal, state, and federal-level legislative advocacy, litigation support, and community engagement. This legal position will directly support Civic Nebraska's robust team of policy, advocacy, and communications professionals as a guardian of constitutional rights and democratic principles.

As our Staff Attorney, you get to

• Conduct legal research, writing, and analysis
• Work with program directors and other staff to research and develop solutions to systemic problems with election law
• Work with community members and community partners to identify issues, and potential systemic policy and litigation solutions to issues raised by the community
• Develop educational materials (e.g., reports, fact sheets, presentations, policy briefs, reports) for key stakeholders
• Draft legislation and ordinances
• Prepare and deliver testimony at the Nebraska Unicameral Legislature and other lawmaking bodies as needed
• Draft legal memoranda, pleadings, affidavits, motions, and briefs
• Interview witnesses and potential clients, participate in discovery and motion
• Serve as liaison between staff and collaborating attorneys
• Assist in preparing for court appearances, depositions, hearings, and trials; advising Civic Nebraska’s various coalitions on in the face of legal challenges
• Advise staff and community organizers on questions related to voting rights
• Assist in ensuring that the organization’s practices comply with applicable laws and regulations;
  Specifically, advising on rapid communications, policy and constitutional matters
• Conduct 501c(3)/501c(4) compliance reviews and assist in the preparation of regulatory reports

This role might be for you if you have the following qualifications

• Demonstrated ability to manage multiple complex projects, simultaneously, with minimal supervision
• Knowledge of local, regional, and/or national issues related to election law
• Legal/litigation experience in the areas of local government law, administrative law, civil rights, and/or appellate practice
• Experience with legislative and administrative advocacy
• Ability to work in a team-oriented, community-focused, and collaborative environment
• Excellent legal research and writing skills
• Frequent public speaking
• J.D. from an accredited law school
• Admission to the Nebraska Bar or eligibility for admission

Salary & Benefits

This position will earn a salary ranging from $72,500 upward, dependent upon skills and experience.

Benefit options include medical, vision, and dental insurance and a 401k. In addition, Civic Nebraska offers unlimited paid time off, a flexible work schedule with an option for two remote working days per week, and several paid holidays. This is a full-time, exempt position.
