Job Description:

Civil Enforcement Division, Civil Recovery Section

The Oregon Department of Justice is seeking applicants for an attorney position in the Civil Recovery Section of the Civil Enforcement Division. This position will be based in our Salem office, with opportunities to work in our Portland or Eugene offices, plus additional opportunities for remote work. The Civil Recovery Section represents all state agencies, boards, and commissions in civil litigation, probate, collections and bankruptcy proceedings.

The successful applicant will represent state agencies in a wide variety of litigation in which the state is a plaintiff, including litigation involving:

  • Contracts and Grant Agreement Disputes.
  • Damage to State Property.
  • Environmental Contamination.
  • Fraud and Over payments.
  • Injunctive Relief.
  • Probate (including estates, guardian ships and conservatorships).
  • Real Property Disputes (including foreclosures, ejectments and quiet title litigation).
  • Receiverships.
  • Wildfire litigation.

Required
  • Active membership in good standing with the Oregon State Bar by the time of appointment.
  • At least five (5) years experience litigating cases in Oregon state or federal court.
  • Possess superior analytical, advocacy, research, verbal communication, and writing skills.
  • Strong work ethic.
  • Experience representing clients, including communicating directly with clients and managing client relationships.
  • Collaborative work history with lawyers and non-lawyers.
  • Demonstrated commitment to diversity, equity, and an inclusive working environment where diverse individual experiences and perspectives are valued and supported.
  • Willingness and availability to travel throughout the state for court appearances, and other case-related work, including overnight stays away from home.
Desired Experience
  • Civil litigation experience, including first chair trial experience and jury trial experience.
  • Commercial litigation experience.
  • Experience negotiating and resolving claims.
  • Completion of each of the following tasks during a trial in state or federal court:
    Opening statement;
    Closing argument;
    Direct examination of a fact witness;
    Cross examination of a fact witness;
    Direct examination of an expert witness;
    Cross examination of an expert witness; and jury selection.
  • Taking and defending depositions in state or federal court actions.
  • Complex discovery experience, including use of electronic discovery platforms.
  • Strong research and writing skills.

salary range $9,063.00 - $17,597.00 per month, depending primarily on years of legal practice experience and other factors. Employees who are Public Employee Retirement System (PERS) participating members will have their base salary increased by 6.95% and pay a 6% employee contribution to PERS; the salary range noted reflects base salary only.
