Job Description

The New York City Law Department is seeking applicants for the position of Assistant Borough Chief in the Tort Division's Vertical Case Management Unit. Under the general supervision of the Borough Chief and the Deputy Borough Chiefs for Litigation Management, the Assistant Borough Chief for Vertical Case Management directly oversees the Borough's vertical case management teams. Tort Division attorneys defend the City of New York in personal injury and property damage cases primarily in State Court.

Attorneys in the Vertical Units are assigned Tort cases to handle from inception through resolution.

The Assistant Borough Chief is responsible for the training, supervision, and evaluation of attorneys and support staff. They review, assign, and edit written work and ensure timely compliance with deadlines and appearances. They also ensure the accurate data entry of litigation events. The Assistant Borough Chief assists with development of division policies and recommendations regarding appeals and settlements. They identify and retain expert witnesses and communicate with senior court personnel, Comptroller's representatives, and City agencies.

This position provides attorneys with opportunities to develop their supervisory and litigation skills. The role is particularly suited for attorneys seeking meaningful public service, particularly while supervising others in state practice.
