Position: Supply Chain Coordinator (International and Domestic)

Nakamoto Forestry is the world’s largest manufacturer of yakisugi, commonly known as “shou sugi ban” in the West, with an unmatched dedication to craft & tradition. We are the largest company supplying North America and Europe with authentically milled and heat treated yakisugi, controlling the entire manufacturing process from our forests in Japan to your walls.

Position

The Supply Chain Coordinator (International & Domestic) manages a targeted international import pipeline alongside domestic procurement. This role administers end-to-end logistics for high-value wood product containers from Japan, while concurrently sourcing and managing domestic inventory for companion tools, hardware, coatings, and woodworking accessories. This position reports to the Operations Manager. This is a full-time, hourly, non-supervisory position.

Responsibilities

Japan-Specific Import Logistics

  • Coordinate the end-to-end supply chain for ocean freight containers from Japanese mills to the Port of Portland.
  • Serve as the primary operational contact for Japanese exporters, freight forwarders, and ocean carriers.
  • Monitor transit milestones and proactively communicate delay risks to warehousing and sales teams.

Compliance & Import Documentation

  • Audit import documentation including Bills of Lading, Commercial Invoices, and Packing Lists for absolute accuracy.
  • Review USDA/APHIS-required Phytosanitary Certificates issued by Japan's Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries (MAFF).
  • Partner with the company's licensed Customs Broker to guarantee seamless US Customs clearance.
  • Validate Sustainable Green Ecosystem Council (SGEC) data—Japan's national forestry standard endorsed by PEFC—to preserve chain‑of‑custody integrity.

Domestic Purchasing (Tools & Accessories)

  • Source, purchase, and maintain optimal inventory levels for domestic tools, hardware, and wood finishes.
  • Issue purchase orders (POs) to US-based vendors and monitor supplier lead times to prevent stockouts.
  • Negotiate volume discounts, freight‑allowed terms, and favorable payment structures with domestic distributors.
  • Confirm that domestically sourced tools and electrical accessories meet relevant US safety standards (e.g., ANSI, OSHA, or UL listings).
  • Evaluate supplier performance based on fill rates, delivery accuracy, and product quality.
  • Coordinate with production, sales, and operations teams to resolve issues and improve flow.
  • Partner with IT and operations teams to identify automation and efficiency opportunities.
  • Perform other duties and special projects as assigned by the management team.
Required Qualifications
  • Minimum 4 years of experience in procurement, inventory control, domestic purchasing, or freight logistics.
  • Associate's or Bachelor’s degree in Supply Chain, Business Administration, or a related field. May substitute work experience in lieu of related degree.
  • Proficiency with ERP procurement software, Excel data manipulation, and basic inventory replenishment formulas.
  • Strong understanding of order management systems, inventory processes, shipping carriers, and freight forwarders.
  • Excellent organizational and communication skills.
  • Ability to thrive in a start‑up or growth‑stage environment — hands‑on and adaptable.
  • Proven work history of punctuality and attendance.
  • Honesty, high ethical standards, and a focus on producing accurate transactional work.
  • Passion for the value of beautiful and sustainable wood products, and authentic long‑term interest in both wood and construction technology.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience with productivity software (Basecamp, Asana, or equivalent)
  • Japanese Language Proficiency Test Level 1.
  • Experience working with Japanese business protocols is highly advantageous.
