Environmental Engineer

Roleand Scope of Position
Provide environmental services and support throughout Eversource that ensure sound business practices and environmental compliance. Responsible for performing site visits to facilities belonging to Eversource in Western and Central Massachusetts to ensure full compliance with air, water and waste rules. Develop policies, training and operational controls for facility operations. Accurately interpret applicable rules, regulations, laws and policies. The position will be based in Springfield, Massachusetts.

Eversource supports work-life balance by offering hybrid schedules for certain roles. Eligibility is based on job responsibilities, operational needs, nature of work and team dynamics. Current guidelines require employees to work at least three days in the office, including Tuesdays and Wednesdays, with the third day set by the employee and supervisor based on department needs. These guidelines apply to roles approved for remote work and are subject to change, based on managerial discretion and work performance.
All applicants must be able to work up to five days in the office if needed (for example: emergencies, training, or other business needs) or should the policy change.
- Maintains facility compliance manuals, permits, SPCC plans and regulatory filings associated with facility compliance matters.
- Works with Operations to advise on environmental issues and policies.
- Assists operations and facilities with compliance matters such as waste storage and disposal, record keeping, etc.
- Communicates requirements, delivers guidance and environmental training.
- Tracks environmental obligations for assigned facilities and prepares documentation for submittal to regulatory agencies as required (reporting, permitting, correspondence, etc.).
- Conducts quarterly compliance inspections to evaluate and if needed correct performance.
- Works with internal and external environmental auditors during formal audit processes to ensure prompt follow-through and appropriate protocol changes based on audit findings.
- Monitors governmental organizations for new rules, regulations, laws and policies applicable to the specific area.
- Defines and assesses procedural, compliance and financial impacts of applicable new rules, regulations, laws and policies.
- Minimum of three (3) years of related technical environmental experience.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
- Strong organization skills.
- Strong knowledge of state and federal rules associated with waste, water and air regulations.
- Strong knowledge in hazardous waste management, waste water management, spill prevention, air pollution control, PCB management.
- Understanding of environmental aspects of building facilities' operations as well as the transmission and distribution of electricity and the distribution of gas a plus.
- Proven ability to work in a fast paced working environment with multiple projects and stakeholders.
- Periodic travel may be required across the Eversource service territory (NH, MA, CT).
- Must be available to travel to facilities in western and central Massachusetts on a regular basis.
- Specific environmental experience in the Northeast region (CT, MA and/or NH) preferred.
- Must be available to work emergency restoration assignment as required.
- Bachelor's degree in Environmental Science, related technical discipline or equivalent experience.
- Driver’s license required.
- Fast paced working environment with multiple projects and stakeholders.
- Must be available to travel to facilities throughout Massachusetts on a regular basis.
