This is a hybrid, full‑time global leadership role based at BSR’s headquarters in San Francisco, overseeing accounting operations across all regions.
We are seeking an experienced and mission‑driven Global Financial Controller (position level: Director) to lead the organization’s core accounting operations and ensure the integrity, accuracy, and timeliness of financial reporting. Serving as a direct partner to the CFO, this senior leader will oversee general ledger accounting, accounts payable, accounts receivable, payroll (including international offices), expense management, etc.
The Financial Controller will manage a team of six and play a critical role in maintaining strong internal controls, ensuring compliance with US GAAP and nonprofit accounting standards. This is a hands‑on leadership role requiring both strategic oversight and operational excellence.
At BSR we have implemented a transparent total compensation framework with an emphasis on internal equity. To maintain our equity, our hiring rate for this position is USD 160,000.

- Oversee the strategy, performance, and day‑to‑day operations of the General Ledger function, including Accounts Payable, Accounts Receivable, Expense Reports, Fixed Assets, Payroll, and related accounting activities.
- Lead monthly, quarterly, and annual financial close in accordance with US GAAP and nonprofit accounting standards (ASC 958).
- Ensure accurate and timely preparation of financial statements and input of accounting records.
- Coordinate annual financial audits and serve as primary liaison with external auditors.
- Ensure compliance with local accounting and payroll requirements (in collaboration with local counterparts).
- Ensure accounting systems are clean, accurate, and up to date, and effectively coordinate with external service providers to support reliable and efficient financial operations.
- Lead effective collaboration with global outsourcing providers, maintaining consistent standards and equitable treatment for BSR employees across all offices.
- Implement process improvements and automation initiatives aligned with BSR’s commitment to continuous improvement, ensuring efficiency gains while thoughtfully considering and respecting the needs of all stakeholders.
- Manage and mentor a team of 6 accounting professionals.
- Create an environment that fosters and values ongoing learning and empowered decision‑making, and where team members consistently push for improved team performance and productivity. Provide honest and constructive feedback to team members to support their ongoing development.
- Prioritize internal clients’ issues and address the most pressing concerns. Proactively reach out to internal clients to collect regular input and feedback.
- Minimum 12 years of experience, including strong familiarity with the NGO space.
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field.
- ACCA or CPA qualified.
- Exceptional written and verbal communication skills and well‑developed interpersonal skills for high‑level interaction with staff and Board of Trustees.
- Proven track record of success on leading business processes and teams. Track record of strong decision‑making skills and managing budgets.
