This position is an on-site position which requires the incumbent to complete their work primarily at an NAU site, campus, or facility with or without accommodation. Opportunities for remote work are rare.
This position is posted as Manager, Building Automation and Commissioning, which is a working title. The NAU system title for this position is Manager, Commissioning & Controls.
Driving a vehicle on behalf of the university is anticipated to be a regular part of this position. Arizona Administrative Code Fleet Safety Policy requires all employees who drive on university business become authorized by submitting Driver’s license information for driving record monitoring, and completion of training appropriate to the level of driving performed. The law applies to all faculty, staff, and students who drive personal or university-owned motorized vehicles for any business purpose.

Employees of Facility Services are considered essential staff and must report to work when the university is closed for emergencies. This position is required to participate in on-call, call back duties and snow removal, which can include days, nights, weekends, and holidays. Under established circumstances will respond to emergency dispatch calls within set time frames Administrative or Campus Living buildings.
Utility Services provides distributed energy to the NAU campus community while exercising fiscal responsibility, and practicing sustainable maintenance and operations.
About the PositionUnder the general direction of the Assistant Director for Utility Services, the Manager, Building Automation and Commissioning will perform, oversee, or review the building commissioning, systems test and balance, and building automation system programming and maintenance on campus.
This position will also work closely with Project Managers, various Facility Services departments, the Office of Sustainability, Information Technology Services, and other university stakeholders to improve campus energy infrastructure, policies, procedures, programs, and efficiency to reach carbon neutrality goals.
This position exists to aid and advise the Assistant Director of Utility Services in fulfilling Facility Services’ mission to the University by providing superior customer service to the Campus community, exercising fiscal responsibility, reporting on leading edge technology, practicing sustainable maintenance and operations methods, and supporting the trade shops to achieve optimal efficiency.
Responsibilities Include Leadership (25%)- Provide leadership, direction, and training for full-time staff, students, and temps, as it relates to utilities, distributed energy and building automation and energy.
- Staff performance planning and evaluation, mentoring for skills and behavioral development.
- Develop policies, procedures, and protocols as it relates to energy management and energy reduction.
- Manage and participate in building energy audits to establish baselines, identify energy conservation measures, propose efficiency projects, and report on improvements.
- Participate as a member of various university and departmental committees as requested.
- Manage outside vendors.
- Review new technologies such as fault detection and diagnostics and smart campus initiatives to provide recommendations for implementation.
- Prepare training programs and instruct staff in new and proper HVAC and control system operation.
- Assist the Assistant Director of utilities with utility consumption projections and budget planning.
- Lead the sustainable smart campus master plan implementation efforts.
- Work with Planning, Design, and Construction staff to participate in design review, submittal review, and commissioning implementation.
- Oversee commissioning efforts on capital projects by working with outside commissioning agents.
- Develop in-house retro commissioning program for campus.
- Provide in-house commissioning on system renovation projects.
- Develop test scripts and process for in-house commissioning agents to follow.
- Retro-commission campus buildings and make control or balance repairs and improvements.
- Work with EHS and ensure building ventilation meets code and safety requirements.
- Oversee Facility Condition Assessment renewal and upkeep.
- Oversee all building automation systems including HVAC, lighting, energy management among others.
- Oversee controls and HVAC maintenance in buildings as needed.
- Develop and program control sequences and schedules.
- Work with ITS to ensure network security on all building automation systems.
- Integrate all building automation and operational technology systems to work together.
- Work with outside vendors for FDD and smart campus initiatives for implementation on campus.
