Responsibilities

As a key member of the Parks Services Team, you are responsible for supervising internal work teams and external contractors to deliver a proactive, high quality and cost-effective bushfire mitigation service to our community. We are looking for a leader who can innovate and drive performance while supporting the professional development and ongoing improvement of the team.

You will develop and implement annual work programs and treatment schedules in line with our Bushfire Risk Management Plan (BRMP), ensuring all works meet the requirements of the WA Bush Fires Act 1954 and relevant environmental regulations.

On a day-to-day basis, you will oversee operations that include pruning, tractor slashing, whipper-snipping and herbicide application, as well as seasonal large-scale contracts for forestry mulching, tractor slashing and firebreak grading. To be successful in this role, you will have proven experience in leading operational teams and managing contracts, paired with a strong understanding of environmental management and a commitment to community safety.

Additional training and professional development will be available for the right candidate to develop skills in planned burning, to eventually lead our team in the execution of small-scale hazard reduction burns such as grass tree maintenance and strip burning.

Selection criteria

To be considered for this role, you must address the following selection criteria in your application (please limit your response to three pages in total):

  • Significant knowledge of bushfire mitigation practices including; mechanical, chemical and hazard reduction burning
  • Knowledge of conservation and natural area management practices
  • Demonstrated knowledge of the safe use and maintenance of plant and machinery used for fire mitigation and fuel load reduction
  • Demonstrated knowledge of WHS policies and procedures
  • Well-developed computer literacy skills and knowledge of relevant computer applications particularly Microsoft suite of products
  • Strong interpersonal and public relation skills
  • Significant experience in managing and leading staff, volunteers, contractors and resources to deliver performance outcomes
  • Qualification in Conservation Land Management / Environmental Science / Horticulture or demonstrated learned knowledge through substantial experience working within these fields
  • Construction Induction Training (White Card)
Benefits and salary

We are offering a salary range of $102,707 to $110,461 per annum (depending on skills and experience), access to a City vehicle and:

  • 12% superannuation with the option to co-contribute up to a further 5%
