The Department of Environmental, Health, Safety & Risk Management(EHSRM) has an opening for an Environmental Affairs Manager to support the University of Alaska Fairbanks - Environmental Protection Program. The successful candidate will, under general direction, lead crucial operations such as planning and directing activities, and establishing and maintaining effective department programs in areas of environmental compliance to provide a safe and healthy environment for students, staff, faculty and visitors.

This position will be responsible for managing, leading and ensuring that departmental programs follow federal, state, and University of Alaska laws, regulations and policies.

The Department of Environmental, Health, Safety and Risk Management (EHSRM) serves critical functions for the University of Alaska Fairbanks (UAF). EHSRM's Environmental Affairs Manager runs a complex Environmental Affairs program steeped in compliance tasks and projects to meet Federal, State, and local regulatory needs along with providing related support to university partners across UAF. This position has a high degree of independence in decision-making and program development.

To thrive in this position the ideal candidate will have 8 - 13 years of ever-increasing environmental program and compliance related experience. Success in this position requires strong initiative, heightened skills in project management, excellent organization, the ability to work independently, and a drive to establish robust working partnerships with federal and state regulatory agencies, and local environmental partners. The Environmental Affairs Manager is a crucial member of the EHSRM leadership team, which works to promote a culture of safety, environmental responsibility and risk mitigation.

The successful candidate will be familiar with EPA, State Department of Environmental Compliance agencies, and NFPA regulations. Strong computer skills are required, including proficiency with Microsoft Office applications and the safe use of equipment appropriate to assigned responsibilities. The position also requires excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to effectively interact and coordinate with regulatory agencies.

Minimum Qualifications:

Bachelor's degree in chemistry, biology, industrial hygiene, public health, waste management or other related field, and six years progressively responsible relevant experience (i.e.: environmental health & safety, environmental compliance, environmental engineering), or an equivalent combination of training and experience. Master's degree preferred in field related to industrial hygiene, environmental management, or safety. Professional licensure or certification may be required.

Preferred Qualifications &

Experience:

Previous supervisory/managerial experience.

Experience with ADEC, Title V permit, storm water management, hazardous materials/waste management and/or environmental compliance in a higher education environment.

Certified by a nationally recognized safety or engineering organization in areas such as radiation hazardous materials, safety, fire safety, industrial hygiene, occupational safety or environmental engineering.

Position Details:

This position is located on the UAF Troth Yeddha' campus in Fairbanks, Alaska. This is a full-time, exempt staff position complete with both a competitive salary and full employee benefits package. UA provides a generous compensation package that includes retirement options, annual leave, 12 paid holidays per year, tuition waivers for employees and family members, and affordable medical, dental and vision care coverage.

New hires will be placed on the UA Staff Salary Schedule, Grade 82, based on education and experience.
