Overview
Senior Director of Operations - Transmission & Substation Construction (REMOTE WITH TRAVEL) — Gryphon Oakwood is working with a leading T&D contractor to find an experienced and strategic Director of Operations. The role will lead and expand a Power Transmission and Substation Construction business across the Midwest and Southeast United States. This senior leader will drive growth, build strategic utility relationships, and deliver operational excellence.
The ideal candidate brings deep industry knowledge, proven experience in operational leadership, and established relationships with major utility clients such as American Electric Power (AEP),
Florida Power & Light (FPL), and Southern Company
. This role combines business development, strategic operations, and team leadership to drive sustainable, profitable growth.
- Develop and execute a regional growth strategy targeting power transmission and substation projects in the Midwest and Southeast U.S.
- Identify and pursue new business opportunities with major utilities and EPCs.
- Lead go-to-market efforts and proposal strategies for large-scale utility contracts.
- Collaborate with executive leadership on long-term strategic planning and investment priorities.
- Serve as a key point of contact for major utility clients, including AEP, FPL, and Southern Company.
- Build, maintain, and strengthen long-term client relationships through trust, performance, and strategic alignment.
- Represent the company at industry events, client meetings, and conferences to enhance visibility and reputation.
- Lead operational execution across multiple transmission and substation projects, ensuring safety, quality, and profitability.
- 10+ years of experience in power transmission and substation construction, including at least 5 years in a senior operational leadership role.
- Demonstrated success in winning and executing utility contracts
, particularly with AEP, FPL, Southern Company
, or similar IOUs. - Strong business development and client relationship skills.
- Deep understanding of utility standards, regulatory requirements, and construction best practices.
- Ability to travel regionally (30–50%).
- Established industry network in the Midwest and Southeast utility markets.
- PMP or similar project management certification.
- Experience working within or alongside EPC firms.
- Knowledge of union and non-union labor environments.
