Please Note:

This position requires full-time on-site work at Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson to facilitate collaboration with various divisions supported by DAS' Administrative Section. Remote work may be permitted up to two days a week, subject to the hiring manager's approval, and/or successful completion of probation.

What You Will Be Doing:

As DMVA's new Payroll Services Supervisor, you will take on a central leadership role, working closely with the HR Business Partner and DAS management while overseeing all payroll functions for the agency. You will supervise a small team of two HR Technicians, ensuring accurate and timely processing of payroll actions, timesheets, and other cyclical tasks. The team, based at the Juneau Auke Bay Armory, will focus on agency-specific needs while maintaining compliance with state laws, collective bargaining agreements, and regulations affecting both covered and non-covered employees.

In this hands-on supervisory role, you will lead, coach, and develop your team while fostering a healthy, sustainable workplace culture that supports work-life balance. You will act as the agency's primary payroll certifier, maintaining strong internal controls and data integrity, and handling complex payroll tasks while training staff to grow their capabilities. Additionally, you will collaborate with the HRBP and Department of Administration to provide policy guidance and technical expertise, particularly as the State's subject matter expert on payroll processes related to State Active Duty, military leave, and military orders, ensuring consistency and compliance across departments.

Our Mission and Culture:

The Alaska Department of Military and Veterans Affairs provides highly motivated, effective professionals to execute global, theater, and state operations. We are always prepared to respond to and assist in the recovery from domestic disasters and emergencies; we serve and support Alaska's veterans; educate Alaska teens in disciplined, structured para-military environments; and cultivate ethically driven members into strong, capable, and innovative leaders.

At the Division of Administrative Services "DAS" we Deliver, Assist and Serve through a "small but mighty team" of highly dedicated individuals where we come together to offer comprehensive financial, procurement, budget, IT, human resources, and administrative services.

We prioritize people because when we take care of the people, they take care of the mission! We believe that mistakes will happen, but we are better for it when we quickly focus on lessons learned instead. We ask for coachability, accountability, and always modeling of respect - for the people we serve and respect for the Merit Principle as our most fundamental value of fairness in HR.

Benefits of Joining Our Team:

This is an opportunity to join a dedicated team, proud of our public protection organization. Our mission provides plenty of opportunities to serve Alaskans when and where it really counts! If you are looking for a sense of meaningful public service, consider joining DAS' newest payroll team! DMVA divisions have a vas impact in our Alaskan communities from impacting veterans, to at risk youth, to supporting our military's readiness with facility management and environmental compliance, to mobilize resources for communities affected by devastating emergencies and disasters - including activating NG service members up to thousands as needed.

So much of what we do or support within DAS is palpable all around us and provides us with a sense of job satisfaction and purpose.

We believe that "taking care of the people" starts with us actively managing and monitoring a healthy workplace culture, but it extends to work-life balance. We know that our workplace must be "value added" to your life. We care about employee engagement and professional development as we know it's crucial to our strategic long-term mission success! Additionally, this position comes with a comprehensive benefits package including paid leave, retirement options, and medical, vision, and dental plans, all designed to support professionals both personally and professionally as they serve the community.

The Working Environment You Can Expect:

The Payroll Services Supervisor is a pivotal member of the Department of Military and Veterans Affairs' small Payroll team, reporting directly to the Human Resources Business Partner. This position offers a modern, well-appointed office environment in Auke Bay at the Joint Use Facility, featuring height-adjustable desks and scenic outdoor trails to promote well-being.
