Position Title
Facilities Bureau Chief – Montana Department of Transportation (MDT)
OverviewMDT is recruiting a Facilities Bureau Chief to provide strategic leadership and executive oversight of MDT’s statewide facilities program.
ResponsibilitiesThe Facility Bureau Chief will provide executive oversight of MDT’s statewide facilities program, including:
- Strategic leadership and executive oversight of capital planning, operational excellence, environmental compliance, and long‑term sustainability.
- Direct planning, acquisition, design, construction, maintenance, and lifecycle management of over 200 facilities valued at more than $200 million.
- Collaborate with other divisions, state agencies, and external partners to ensure facilities support MDT mission and operational needs.
- Work with District Maintenance Chiefs to provide oversight and guidance to district maintenance carpenter positions.
- Supervise three direct employees and indirectly manage the facility maintenance and custodian teams.

Education and Experience
- Bachelor’s Degree in Business Management, Construction Management, Engineering, Architecture, or a related field.
- At least 5 years of experience in building management, facilities management, construction management, or a related field.
- At least 3 years of supervisory experience.
- Alternative combinations of related education and experience may be considered, such as 9 years of related experience and 3 years of supervisory.
- Comprehensive knowledge of facilities planning, construction, environmental compliance, and capital financing along with expertise in budgeting and fiscal management.
- Strong leadership, negotiation, and communication skills, with the ability to represent MDT at executive and legislative levels.
- Ability to manage multiple high‑value programs, resolve complex operational and fiscal conflicts, and translate technical and financial data into actionable strategies for diverse audiences.
- Driver’s record will be verified. Successful applicants must sign a release form that authorizes MDT to obtain the applicant’s permanent driving records. Compliance with Mont. Admin. R. 2.6.201, "State Vehicle Use," and MDT Policy #6.03.001, "State Vehicle Use Policy" is a condition of employment.
