Assistant Attorney-in-Charge (AAIC) Position
The Juvenile Rights Practice has an Assistant Attorney-in-Charge (AAIC) position with a strong focus on Juvenile Delinquency Practice in the Bronx Trial office. The AAIC should have a demonstrated commitment to addressing fundamental issues of juvenile justice within and strong knowledge of child welfare within an interdisciplinary model of representation and an interest in creative approaches to management and staff development.
The AAIC will work closely with the borough's Attorney-in-Charge in the overall administration of the office. The AAIC is involved in all aspects of day-to-day operations and works closely with the borough's Attorney-in-Charge to train, supervise and mentor staff. The AAIC participates in Practice-wide management discussions and decision-making and is responsible for maintaining relationships with other stakeholders in the legal, court, and service communities.
Duties/Responsibilities
Office Leadership & Program Management
- Together with the Borough Attorney-in-Charge, provide legal and managerial leadership to the Bronx Trial Office
- Reinforce and maintain staff accountability
- Evaluate conflicting demands and prioritize workload
Quality of Practice & Client Service
- Monitor and maintain high standard of representation and client service
- Provide direct representation in client service while carrying a caseload
- Respond to client, community and staff concerns
Office Operations & Resource Planning
- Evaluate office needs and identify necessary resources to address the needs
Litigation Strategy & Advocacy
- Analyze legal issues, lead and support legal strategy and supervise their implementation
- Represent JRP and Legal Aid in the community
People Management, Supervision & Training
- Provide direct supervision and training support to Juvenile and Adolescent Defender Practitioners
- Foster and encourage teamwork and communication
- Mentor and evaluate supervisory staff
- Develop skills and knowledge of staff members
- Other duties as assigned
Team Development and Supervision
- Supervise employee hours, assign work, approve time off, and remote work schedule requests following the guidance of LAS policy and procedures
- Conduct management and supervision practices that affirmatively support equity and inclusion in the workplace
- Supervise direct reports in setting performance standards, provide routine feedback as well as coaching/counseling, and issue disciplinary action as needed
- Identify and provide training and development opportunities and ensure mandatory training is completed
Professional Development and Other Duties as Assigned
- Participate in continuous professional development
- Attend management meetings, participate in management trainings, and utilize current employment policies, practices and guidance as provided by management and Human Resources
- Continuously learn about forms of bias in the workplace and demonstrate affirmative behaviors that support an inclusive work environment
- Other duties as assigned
Required qualifications:
- Admitted to the NYS Bar
- 5+ years of legal practice in child welfare and/or juvenile delinquency practice
Preferred qualifications:
- Supervisory experience preferred, but not required
- Minimum of eight years legal practice in youth and/or criminal defense is strongly preferred
