Director of Environmental, Health and Safety

The Director of Environmental, Health and Safety is responsible for establishing and administering a comprehensive environmental health and safety program to ensure a safe and healthy environment for faculty, students, staff and the University community. The Director assists with ensuring that operations are in compliance with University policies and standards, the Occupational Safety & Health Act and other applicable environmental and health rules, regulations and laws.

The Director oversees and coordinates programs related to fire safety, emergency and service response, laboratory and research safety, hazardous materials management and regulatory compliance.

This is an in-person, on-campus, non-remote position.

Regulatory Compliance:

• Ensure institutional and departmental compliance with the Department of Environmental Protection, Occupational Safety and Health Act, Environmental Protection Agency, and other regulatory agency requirements.
• Report alleged violations of regulations and policies with regard to the Occupational Safety and Health Act, Department of Environmental Protection, Environmental Protection Agency, and other regulatory agency policies to the Office of General Counsel and assist the Office of the General Counsel in investigating any alleged violations and implementing corrective actions, if necessary.
• Educate the campus community on issues relating to the Occupational Safety and Health Administration, Environmental protection Agency, New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection, and other regulatory agencies.
• Identify, report and assist in investigating regulatory violations at the request of the General Counsel; support corrective action planning and implementation.
• Monitor University compliance with the Department of Environmental Protection (NJDEP), Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA), Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), and other regulatory agencies. Prepare necessary reports for the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA), New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection (NJDEP), Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), and other regulatory agencies.
• Coordinate response plans for incidents involving safety hazards, hazardous materials, and environmental emergencies.
• Serve as a member of the Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC).

• Develop, implement, and oversee mandatory and voluntary EHS training programs (in-person and online), including but not limited to:
  • Hazard Communication
  • Bloodborne Pathogens
  • Asbestos Awareness
  • Lock Out/ Tag Out
  • Ladder Safety
  • Slip, trip and Fall Prevention
  • Emergency Response
  • Confined Space Entry
  • Personal Protective Equipment (PPE)
  • Lift Training
• Educate the campus community on environmental, health, and safety regulations and best practices.
• Assign, track, and monitor OSHA and compliance training for Facilities Management and related teams

• Collaborate with the Campus Fire and Safety Supervisor to ensure fire and life safety systems, inspections, and corrective actions are implemented and maintained campus-wide.
• Assist in directing Fire and Safety and Service Response Facilities Management staff to ensure daily regulatory compliance.
• Serve on University committees, including the Fire and Safety Committee.

Program Operations:

• Inspect University-owned and leased properties to ensure compliance with leasing agreements, safety requirements, security measures, and key control procedures.
• Serve as liaison to Bruce Springsteen Center for American Music for custodial services, landscaping, and service response coordination.

Develop and manage inventory control systems, including:

• Hazardous materials inventories
• Work in conjunction with Finance and Budgets on fixed asset inventory
• Campus signage inventory and distribution
• EV charging equipment and usage monitoring

Monitor and oversee campus electric vehicle (EV) charging stations to ensure operational readiness and compliance.

• Assist with coordination of the fire and safety program and work with the Campus Fire and Safety Supervisor to direct the Fire and Safety and Service Response Facilities Management staff in the daily compliance with various regulations and requirements.
• Serve on appropriate University committees, such as the Fire and Safety Committee.
