Position: Assembly Engineer I

Assembly Engineer I

Location:

Springfield, Massachusetts, United States.

Shift: 1st shift, 7:00 am – 3:30 pm (Monday‑Friday).

Onsite/non‑remote position.

The Manufacturing Engineer will develop and implement optimal, cost‑effective manufacturing processes and methods in accordance with product specifications and quality standards. The role recommends and implements improvements to production processes, methods, and controls, coordinates manufacturing launch for new or revised products, and focuses on process improvement, problem resolution, project management, and employee training.

Assembly Operations (Essentials)
  • Troubleshoot root causes related to product failures and assembly line stoppages.
  • Use lean concepts to optimize assembly line throughput.
  • Design, implement, and document assembly techniques and equipment to improve throughput while maintaining operator safety and product quality.
  • Implement mistake‑proof systems in assembly operations to guarantee product quality.
  • Comply with firearm regulations and traceability.
  • Participate in product testing and identify issues.
  • Work with operations and engineering to launch new products on time.
Manufacturing Operations (Essentials)
  • Research, design, and develop manufacturing processes, including production flow, assembly methods, and production equipment.
  • Understand and interpret complex part drawings and product design intent.
  • Coordinate manufacturing launch of new/revised products, establishing goals, training team members, and evaluating results.
  • Apply project management techniques to ensure tools, gauges, fixtures, equipment, routings, and CMM/CNC programs are fully defined, documented, and implemented.
  • Design, develop, test, or source and cost‑justify various tools, machinery, and equipment for recommended manufacturing methods.
  • Perform product/process analysis for cost reduction, quality improvement, and efficiency improvement.
  • Manage and maintain accuracy of the S&W manufacturing routing database, including operation sequence, description, labor hours, set‑up and changeover times, machine cycle times, and appropriate work instructions.
  • Work effectively with external technical support and continuously train internal staff.
  • Represent manufacturing on cross‑functional teams.
  • Work in a team environment.
  • Work with minimal supervision, establish priority and meet scheduled completion dates.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.
Experience, Competencies and Education
  • Bachelor's degree (BSME) or equivalent with 1‑5 years’ experience in a manufacturing environment (preferably firearms industry; strong understanding of lean principles).
  • Experience with PCDMS CMM programming preferred.
  • Experience with Solid Works preferred.
  • Experience addressing needs and concerns of shop personnel in a manufacturing environment, and good customer service skills.
  • Experience with handling and shooting firearms.
Language Skills
  • Working command of the English language.
  • Ability to read, write and interpret English.
  • Ability to communicate verbally and in writing (verbal instructions, written memos, and instructions).
Computer Skills
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel, Access, and PowerPoint.
  • Solid Works and/or CAM knowledge a plus.
  • CMM programming & PCDMS a plus.
Training Requirements
  • Complete all necessary training as required by assigned department and position.
  • Participate in and follow all company initiatives.
  • Participate in continuous improvement projects (Kaizen events, 5S, etc.).
  • Participate in product testing.
Physical Demands
  • Ability to sit, stand, walk, climb, bend, stoop, push, pull, carry, reach, twist.
  • Ability to lift up to 50 pounds.
Personal Protective Equipment (PPE)
  • Safety glasses with side shields and hearing protection required on factory floor.
  • Additional PPE may be required depending on task; includes safety eyewear, hearing protection, and safety footwear.
  • All employees must apply ergonomic correctness to all job tasks.
Work Environment
  • Very fast‑paced and demanding work environment.
  • Successful candidates spend the majority of time on the shop floor.
  • Employees may be exposed to manufacturing noise, airborne liquid chemicals, fine particulate dust, ambient temperatures, and industrial lighting.
