The Biomimicry Institute ("TBI") is seeking a strategic leader to oversee our communications function. This role is responsible for translating our mission, programs, and thought leadership into compelling, coordinated communications across all channels.
Role OverviewThe Director leads communications strategy, editorial planning, storytelling, media relations, brand consistency, digital engagement, and campaign execution. The Director will work closely with leadership, program leads, and external partners to strengthen TBI's visibility and support organizational priorities.
Essential Functions Communications Strategy and Planning- Develop and implement strategies that advance TBI's mission, fundraising goals, and public visibility.
- Maintain an integrated communications calendar across campaigns, newsletters, social media, and events.
- Translate complex scientific and innovation content into accessible narratives.
- Support thought leadership by identifying storytelling and media opportunities.
- Lead the development of high-quality content across all TBI channels.
- Ensure all communications are accurate, inclusive, and consistent with TBI's brand standards.
- Build a robust story pipeline across programs like Ask Nature and Ray of Hope.
- Manage media relations, press inquiries, and pitch development.
- Execute campaigns tied to major organizational priorities and field-building opportunities.
- Support leadership with talking points, messaging, and public statements.
- Oversee digital channels, including the website, email, and social media.
- Track and report on communications metrics (KPIs) to inform future strategy.
- Coordinate with vendors supporting digital, design, and PR efforts.
- Partner with the Development team to create compelling donor and funder communications.
- Support grant-related storytelling and stewardship efforts.
- Collaborate across the organization to align priorities and workflows.
- Utilize project-management systems (e.g., Asana) to plan and track work.
- Supervise communications staff, contractors, and vendors.
- Foster a team environment grounded in clarity, accountability, and professional growth.
- Significant experience in communications, marketing, journalism, or PR.
- Demonstrated ability to execute multi-channel communications strategies.
- Strong writing, editing, and storytelling skills.
- Experience managing editorial calendars and digital communications.
- Proven experience supervising staff or cross-functional teams.
- Strong project-management skills and ability to manage multiple deadlines.
- Ability to translate complex ideas for varied audiences.
- Commitment to TBI's mission and ethical communication.
- Experience in nonprofit, environmental, climate, or science communications.
- Experience with media relations, fundraising communications, and CMS/analytics tools.
- Remote-First: Duties are performed in a home workspace.
- Travel: May require up to 10% travel.
- Compensation: $90,000 - $125,000 (for CA, CO, NY, NJ, WA applicants).
