About The Team

The Customer Experience (Marketing) team works to showcase our brand through the lens of expertise and love. They work to provide a personalized experience for our consumers backed by best-in-class, data-driven marketing capabilities. The Customer Experience team focuses across 4 departments including Marketing, Creative, Communications, and our Loyalty & CRM team. Everyone brings their own point of view to create a unique experience for the pets and pet parents.

At Pet Smart, teamwork and connection are core to how we thrive. This role is based at our Phoenix Home Office, with an expectation of working a minimum of four days in the office each week. In a standard work week, associates may work up to one remote “flex day” (with leader approval). As a Senior Copywriter
, you’re a natural storyteller with a strategic mindset. You understand how words support brand vision, customer needs, and business goals. And you know how to make them work hard across channels and campaigns. You thrive in the always-on pace of retail, partner closely with designers and stakeholders, and bring clarity, heart, and intention to every line.

This role is for someone who is organized, deadline-driven, and comfortable juggling multiple projects  edit thoughtfully, take feedback well, and bring a solutions-first attitude to everything you do.

You’re passionate about words, retail, and pets. And you’re excited by doing work that makes a real impact. Being a pet parent is a plus, but being an animal lover is a must.

Responsibilities
  • Write compelling, customer-first copy across digital, social, email, web/app, print, video scripts, and in-store experiences.
  • Bring the Pet Smart brand voice to life: adapting tone and style by channel while maintaining clarity, consistency, and emotional resonance.
  • Concept and execute integrated campaigns that balance big ideas with real-world business impact.
  • Collaborate closely with designers, art directors, project managers, and fellow writers to deliver best-in-class creative.
  • Translate marketing strategies and briefs into clear, engaging messaging that resonates with pet parents and drives action.
  • Present work confidently, articulating the thinking behind your copy to cross-functional partners.
  • Stay tapped into cultural, retail, and messaging trends to bring fresh ideas and relevant thinking to the team.
  • Manage multiple projects simultaneously in a fast-paced, deadline-driven environment without sacrificing quality.
  • Embrace new tools and technologies (including AI) to elevate efficiency, creativity, and output.
  • Take ownership of your work (from first concept to final polish) proactively solving problems and pushing ideas further.
Skills & Experience
  • Bachelor’s degree in communications, journalism, advertising, or a related field preferred, but a strong portfolio and relevant experience matter most.
  • 6+ years of professional copywriting experience, ideally within an in-house or retail-focused creative team.
  • A portfolio that demonstrates conceptual thinking, storytelling, and versatility across channels and formats.
  • Mastery of grammar and the ability to write confidently within an established brand voice.
  • Experience writing subject lines, headlines, CTAs, and long-form content with a focus on clarity, impact, and conversion.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Word; familiarity with macOS, Adobe Creative Suite, Figma, XD, and project management tools like Workfront is a plus.
  • Comfort working at speed, managing multiple priorities, and delivering high-quality work consistently.
  • Curious, motivated, and always pushing for the best work.
