Organizational Overview

Somos Un Pueblo Unido (Somos) is a 30-year-old statewide membership-based racial and economic justice organization dedicated to organizing immigrant families and low-wage workers. Our work focuses on building long-term community power, protecting rights, and improving economic conditions. We employ a range of strategies, including community education, leadership development, litigation, grassroots policy and legislative advocacy, community-based research, naturalization support, and civic engagement.

Position

Summary

The Communications Director is a strategic and creative leader who will execute communications that reflect our values and grow public awareness of Somos’ mission, vision, programs, and policy initiatives. This role oversees all external communications, including media relations, narrative strategy, digital content, and organizational messaging, while supporting campaigns and coalition efforts. This highly collaborative role works closely with the policy team, organizers, leaders, and community members.

Key Responsibilities Strategy Leadership
  • Develop and implement communications plans aligned with our goals and campaigns.
  • Lead narrative development and strategy across all campaigns and initiatives.
  • Ensure a consistent, community-rooted voice and branding across all platforms.
  • Develop and align public relations, donor relations, and campaign communications strategies.
  • Measure and report on the effectiveness of communications initiatives.
  • Proactively identify communications risks and opportunities in political, cultural, and media landscapes.
Media Relations
  • Monitor media to identify opportunities and risks.
  • Cultivate relationships with journalists, editors, influencers, community partners, and government agencies to promote campaigns, events, and press conferences.
  • Draft and pitch press releases, advisories, statements, op-eds, and talking points.
  • Serve as the primary media contact, coordinating media requests, interviews, media appearances, press events, etc.
  • Provide media training for Somos members, spokespeople, community members, and staff.
  • Support and lead rapid response moments.
  • Translate complex policy or movement goals into accessible, engaging language for diverse audiences.
Digital Strategy and Content
  • Oversee social media strategy and content creation across platforms.
  • Keep members, donors, and allies informed through newsletters, action alerts, and other updates.
  • Analyze performance metrics and adapt content accordingly.
Internal Support
  • Travel throughout New Mexico to coordinate Somos media events.
  • Oversee staff and consultants responsible for website maintenance, graphic design, polling and research, and social media.
  • Support cross-team content needs (fundraising, organizing, events, etc.)
  • Lead development of communications materials: toolkits, fact sheets, visuals, etc.
  • Collaborate with the development team to create compelling donor-facing communications (impact reports, appeals, etc.)
Qualifications
  • A strong commitment to social, economic, and racial justice.
  • Excellent writing and oral communication skills in both English and Spanish.
  • Prior experience in the communications field, preferably within a nonprofit or advocacy setting.
  • Willingness to work evenings and weekends as necessary.
  • A valid driver’s license. Mileage compensation and car rental options are available for work-related travel.
  • Strong computer skills with the ability to become proficient in relevant software and platforms such as Every Action, Constant Contact, Microsoft Suite, Adobe, Canva, analytics platforms, media databases, and similar tools.
  • Experience in supervising staff and/or contractors.
  • Strong project management in a fast-paced environment.
  • Bachelor’s Degree in a relevant field.
