Job SummaryPeace For DC is launching its first formal Volunteer Program, and we are seeking a highly organized, people-centered Volunteer Program Coordinator to build and manage this new initiative. This role will design and implement volunteer systems, support recruitment and onboarding, coordinate volunteer placements, and ensure volunteers feel valued, prepared, and connected to our mission.
In addition, this position will provide program support for the DC Peace Academy, assisting with classroom logistics, materials preparation, attendance tracking, and participant support during in-person and virtual sessions.
This is an ideal role for someone who loves building relationships, creating structure, and supporting community-centered programs.
Key Responsibilities Volunteer Program Development & Coordination- Build Peace For DC’s volunteer program from the ground up, including structure, policies, and workflows.
- Develop clear volunteer role descriptions aligned with organizational goals, equity values, and community needs.
- Recruit, screen, and onboard volunteers; maintain communication throughout their engagement.
- Create and facilitate a “Peace For DC 101” orientation, including mission overview and elevator pitch practice.
- Coordinate volunteer scheduling, placement, and supervision in collaboration with program staff.
- Maintain volunteer records, hours, and documentation using volunteer management tools.
- Develop recognition and retention strategies (e.g., thank-you notes, spotlights, appreciation events, welcome swag).
- Establish feedback loops to assess volunteer satisfaction and program impact.
- Support risk management processes, including background checks, waivers, and safety protocols.
- Serve as the primary point of contact for volunteers, ensuring they feel supported, informed, and connected.
- Collaborate with the Communications team to capture volunteer stories, photos, and highlights for social media and reports.
- Support volunteer spotlights, testimonials, and impact stories that elevate Peace For DC’s mission.
- Ensure volunteers understand brand voice, messaging, and community-centered storytelling principles.
- Assist with drafting short volunteer-facing communications (emails, reminders, updates).
- Recruit volunteers through community events, partnerships, social media, and corporate/board networks.
- Coordinate volunteer participation in outreach activities such as tabling, flyering, and community ambassador roles.
- Support volunteers engaged in advocacy, peer-to-peer fundraising, and social media amplification.
- Build relationships with partner organizations to expand volunteer pipelines and opportunities.
- Prepare and organize materials for classes, workshops, and special sessions.
- Take attendance daily and ensure accurate entry into spreadsheets and tracking systems.
- Assist with classroom setup, cleanup, and lunch break logistics.
- Provide support during in-person and virtual sessions, including tech assistance and participant coordination.
- Collect surveys, exit forms, and other evaluation materials.
- Help manage supplies, inventory, and ordering needs.
- Complete additional tasks as assigned to support program delivery and participant experience.
- Bachelor’s degree OR equivalent experience in volunteer management, program coordination, community engagement, or related fields.
- 2-4 years of experience in volunteer coordination, community programs, or nonprofit work.
