University Development and Alumni Relations (UDAR) supports UC Berkeley through communications, public outreach, and fundraising. The Major Gifts team focuses on securing philanthropic support from alumni, parents, and friends in the $100,000–$5,000,000 range, primarily in Southern California, the Bay Area, Texas, Florida, and the Northeast. The team consists of 18 staff, including a Deputy Director, three senior development directors, gift officers, and administrative staff.
PositionSummary
Associate Director, New York Region – The East Coast-based role focuses on major gift fundraising in the tri‑state area for the university. Responsibilities include formulating strategies, managing a portfolio of donors capable of giving $250,000+, and achieving a minimum of $1,000,000 in annual fundraising.

Responsibilities- Develop and manage a dynamic portfolio of approximately 120 university prospects to identify, qualify, cultivate, solicit, and steward donors.
- Plan, organize, and direct large‑scale fundraising plans involving multiple campus and alumni stakeholders.
- Write proposals for solicitation of individual, corporate, and foundation prospects.
- Manage and staff campus leadership travel, including Chancellor, Vice Chancellors, Deans, and Faculty.
- Serve as an expert or lead development professional in a specific academic discipline on behalf of campus units.
- Ensure predetermined fundraising goals are met with a minimum annual target of $1,000,000.
- Evaluate programs using data analyses and regional expertise, making recommendations for improvement.
- Recruit key volunteers to assist in advancement efforts.
- Oversee work of professional and support staff involved in multi‑component fundraising programs.
- Attend functions, meetings, and serve on internal or external committees as a representative of the location.
- Minimum three years of leadership‑level or major‑gift‑level fundraising experience demonstrating advanced knowledge of fundraising, donor relations, and public relations.
- Advanced knowledge of the tri‑state region, including current issues relevant to UC Berkeley and higher education.
- Advanced understanding of public higher‑education institutions and their missions, goals, and infrastructure.
- Knowledge of applicable laws, rules, regulations, and policies.
- Excellent written, oral, and interpersonal communication skills; political acumen to establish and maintain relationships.
- Ability to make persuasive presentations to secure major philanthropic gifts.
- Strong organizational, analytical, and project‑management skills with creative decision‑making abilities.
- Strong confidentiality management skills.
- Bachelor’s degree in a related field or equivalent experience/training.
- Salary range: $123,000 – $137,000 (based on experience).
- 100 % full‑time, career position with full UC benefits.
- Exempt and paid monthly.
- Remote position with preference for East Coast; 20 % travel required.
- Position is not eligible for visa sponsorship.
