Full-Time Habitat Restoration Engagement Specialist

Save The Bay’s mission is to protect and restore the Bay for people and wildlife. We are the only regional organization that integrates political advocacy, wetland restoration, and education to shape a healthy and resilient region. We are a team of passionate, creative, strategic and collaborative people, dedicated to the urgent work of building Bay Area resilience and hope in the face of the escalating impacts of climate change.

Position

Summary

The Restoration Engagement Specialist leads community‑based restoration programs for youth and adult volunteers, acts as an environmental educator, provides curriculum and guidance, manages large volunteer groups on projects such as invasive species removal, native plant propagation, out planting, and shoreline cleanups, assists the Habitat Restoration Team in deepening public engagement and advancing community partnerships, and supports development and evaluation of new programming to maximize impact.

The position works Tuesday‑Saturday to facilitate weekend public programs.

Education Program Manager

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
  • Community-based Restoration (70%) – Lead field programs for student, corporate, affinity, community groups and general volunteers (average 3 days a week); participate in habitat restoration activities including invasive plant removal, native plant collection, propagation, out planting, and shoreline cleanups; write program curriculum; ensure best restoration practices; support summer vegetation biodiversity monitoring; assist with operation and maintenance of trucks, tools and native plant nurseries.
  • Community Partnerships (15%) – Build and deepen community partnerships aligned with equity goals; coordinate restoration programs for partners; maintain detailed records; evaluate program impacts; collaborate on strategy; participate in project planning; conduct partner presentations as needed.
  • Administrative & Cross‑Departmental Work (15%) – Represent Habitat Restoration Team at bi‑weekly editorial meetings; participate in cross‑departmental and all‑staff activities; support fundraising campaigns, media events, conferences; provide restoration‑focused copy for Communications; other duties as assigned.
Qualifications and Experience
  • Ability to work Tuesday–Saturday and lead weekend programs.
  • Curiosity, growth‑oriented mindset, and enthusiasm for up to four field days a week in varying weather.
  • Detail oriented, organized across multiple projects and stakeholders.
  • Understanding of Diversity, Equity, Inclusivity, and Accessibility (DEIA) in habitat restoration and education.
  • Experience with diverse student populations and people with differing ability levels.
  • At least 2 years leading inquiry‑based education programs for youth in the field.
  • Experience with wetland restoration, ecology, environmental science, biology, conservation, or related field.
  • Knowledge of basic Bay ecology, wetland habitats, and California native plants.
  • Strong initiative, creativity, and drive for independent problem‑solving.
  • Collaborative team player who communicates regularly to support the team.
  • Flexible and easily adaptable to change.
  • Clean background check.
  • First Aid and CPR certification (training provided if needed).
  • Ability to lift at least 40 lbs.
Preferred
  • Experience working with historically excluded communities, most impacted by climate change.
  • Demonstrated ability building community partnerships.
  • Spanish language skills.
Driving Requirements
  • Current California driver’s license, clean driving record, and access to a personal vehicle required.
  • Regularly drive a Save The Bay work truck, occasionally with a trailer attached.
  • Commute times may be up to three hours during a day but are considered part of the 8‑hour workday.
Position Logistics

Field days take place at various restoration sites around the San Francisco Bay Area. Office days are primarily performed remotely, with scheduled in‑person staff and team meetings in Oakland, CA. A flexible work environment is provided along with equipment, training and virtual connectivity.

Compensation and Benefits

This is a regular, full‑time, non‑exempt position. Starting wage is $30.91 per hour. Benefits include: medical, dental, vision, acupuncture/chiropractic, and life insurance; 12 paid vacation days per year to start, 13‑14 paid holidays, and 15 days sick leave per calendar year; 403(b) retirement plan; stipend for remote work and home‑office equipment; reimbursement for travel mileage and bridge tolls up to 50 miles each way per day.
