About ERA

Equal Rights Advocates (ERA) is a 501(c)3 national nonprofit organization that fights for gender justice. For more than 50 years, ERA has led the country in protecting and expanding economic and educational access and opportunities for women, girls, and gender‑expansive people. Through litigation, policy advocacy, and public education, our work advances gender, racial, and economic equity.

Overview

ERA’s Communications Internship program is designed to help social‑justice minded, creative, and social media‑savvy college and graduate students gain knowledge and experience in pursuit of a career in nonprofit communications, digital marketing, social media, and content creation. We are seeking to host two Communications Interns in the Fall 2026 semester (September‑December).

What You Will Do

You will learn from, shadow, and collaborate on projects with ERA’s Strategic Communications Team. Taking into account your strengths and areas of interest—as well as our team’s needs—learning opportunities and project focus may include social media content creation, video creation and editing, graphic design, digital marketing trends monitoring, digital communications data collection and analysis, communications campaign strategy development, event planning/support, drafting copy for digital and marketing platforms, and/or narrative shifting through community storytelling.

Who

Should Apply
  • Preference will be given to undergraduate students planning to pursue a career in nonprofit work, public policy, or public service, and who are studying any of the following: communications, marketing, multimedia, public relations, digital media/graphic design, nonprofit management, political science, or another area of study supporting the student’s plan to enter the social justice field.
  • We are happy to consider candidates who are not pursuing an undergraduate degree, as long as they are at least 18 years old and have a strong interest in pursuing a career in nonprofit communications.
What ERA Is Looking For

A successful intern will offer a blend of creativity, project management skills, and practical experience with a variety of social media platforms. We’d love to host someone with:

  • Demonstrated interest in and commitment to civil rights, gender equity, and social justice
  • Strong written communication skills are required
  • Good organizational skills and attention to detail
  • Experience with Canva preferred
  • Experience with video creation or editing preferred
  • Ability to handle multiple tasks and projects simultaneously and work well collaboratively in a fast‑paced environment
What Will Be Your Takeaway

An enriching experience at a nonprofit organization working toward gender, racial, and economic justice; exposure to and experience with a variety of professional Communications functions, skills, and tools; content you create that can be added to your professional portfolio, including examples of your written work, graphic design, and/or video production; experience working independently on projects as well in collaboration with others;

professional connections; social media / digital marketing data analysis; and other skills you can add to your résumé/CV.

Hours, Location, and Compensation

The internship will run for approximately 15 weeks, from early September through early December. Interns must be willing to work at least 15 hours per week. The internship may be fully remote anywhere within the United States, but preference will be given to those who can work an in‑person or hybrid work schedule in San Francisco. This is an unpaid internship. You will be eligible to receive monthly reimbursement for cell phone expenses for the duration of the internship.

How to Apply

Please submit your application with a résumé and cover letter by July 25, 2026. In your cover letter, tell us about your academic pursuits, why you are interested in this specific internship, and how your interests or goals align with ERA’s work and mission.
