Position Title :
Community Service Worker

Reports To: Program Lead, Vision Mates

I. Scope and summary of primary responsibilities

The Community Service Worker plays a key role in supporting the successful delivery of the CNIB Vision Mate Program across the Greater Toronto Area. Reporting directly to the Program Lead, this position contributes to the planning, coordination, and evaluation of program activities aimed at fostering meaningful connections between volunteers and individuals who are blind or partially sighted. The role demands strong communication and organizational skills, sound judgment, a high degree of professionalism, and the ability to work both independently and as part of a collaborative team environment.

The incumbent is responsible for engaging with volunteers and program participants, maintaining accurate records in the program’s data systems, and ensuring that services are delivered smoothly and effectively. A key function of the role is to support volunteer onboarding by conducting thorough reference checks and interviews, ensuring prospective volunteers meet program standards and align with CNIB’s mission and values. The Community Service Worker also provides ongoing support to participants and volunteers, contributes to assessments and referrals, and plays an integral part in ensuring a positive, inclusive, and supportive experience for all involved in the program.

II.

Essential functions

The position entails, but is not limited to, the following general responsibilities:

  • Assist with the coordination, implementation, and evaluation of the Vision Mate Program.
  • Conduct volunteer onboarding, including interviews and reference checks.
  • Maintain and manage an up-to-date participant and volunteer database.
  • Provide timely and effective support to participants and volunteers.
  • Complete assessments and make appropriate referrals for participants.
  • Maintain consistent communication with volunteers, staff, and participants to ensure program engagement and address needs or concerns.
  • Utilize digital tools such as Microsoft Teams, Zoom, Word, Excel, and other Microsoft Office applications to communicate, organize information, and complete administrative tasks efficiently.
  • Travel within the GTA to support program-related activities and attend meetings or events.
III. Qualifications

This position is funded through Canada Summer Jobs. To be eligible to participate in the Canada Summer Jobs initiative, individuals must meet the requirements outlined in the Canada Summer Contribution Agreement.

Knowledge and Skill Requirements
  • Trustworthy, empathetic, and patient with strong interpersonal skills.
  • Reliable and self-directed, with excellent organizational and communication abilities.
  • Strong attention to detail and creative problem-solving capabilities.
  • Comfortable using databases and technology tools to manage program data.
  • Able to travel independently within the GTA.
  • Willingness to complete training related to CNIB programs, vision loss, and volunteer engagement (e.g., CNIB U courses, job shadowing).
Experience and Education
  • Experience working in community service or volunteer-based programs preferred.
  • Post-secondary education in social services, community work, or a related field an asset.
Work environment
  • This is a hybrid position based at 1525 Yonge Street, Toronto, with a combination of in-office and remote work, as approved by the supervisor.
  • Occasional travel throughout the Greater Toronto Area is required to complete in-home assessments and facilitate volunteer-participant matches.
  • Regular interaction with volunteers, program participants, and community partners is expected.
