The organization blends real-world first responder experience with trauma-informed, evidence-based education to help agencies and individuals move from surviving to thriving. It partners with law enforcement, fire/EMS, dispatch, corrections, and other public safety agencies to build sustainable in-house wellness and peer support systems, in collaboration with licensed clinicians through Driftwood Psychotherapy, LLC.
Services range from agency-level peer support program development, resilience training, and stigma-reduction initiatives to nationwide virtual peer support, coaching, and therapy for responders, veterans, and families. Through initiatives such as the Badge & Bone Initiative and the Badges & Breakthroughs Podcast, the organization works to shatter stigma, foster connection, and equip first responders and their families with practical tools to heal without judgment.
- Role Description The Nonprofit Management Specialist volunteer will support the operational, programmatic, and outreach efforts that advance Badges & Breakthroughs, Inc.’s mission to serve first responders and their families. This is a remote volunteer role focused on coordinating projects, assisting with program development, and helping streamline internal processes and documentation. Day-to-day tasks may include supporting event planning and logistics for trainings and workshops, assisting with fundraising campaigns and donor communications, and conducting research on best practices in first responder mental health and nonprofit operations.
The specialist will help prepare materials for training and peer support initiatives, track key metrics, and collaborate with leadership and volunteers to improve organizational effectiveness. This role is ideal for someone who is mission-driven, organized, and comfortable working independently in a virtual environment.
- Strong communication skills, including clear written and verbal communication, interpersonal skills, and the ability to collaborate with diverse stakeholders.
- Event planning skills to help organize trainings, workshops, and virtual gatherings, including scheduling, logistics coordination, and participant communication.
- Research skills to gather, synthesize, and present information on nonprofit best practices, mental health resources, and first responder wellness initiatives.
- Fundraising skills to support donor outreach, campaign planning, grant research, and stewardship activities.
- Training-related skills, such as assisting with curriculum development, preparing training materials, and coordinating virtual or in-person training sessions.
- Experience or strong interest in nonprofit management, mental health, public safety, or first responder communities is highly beneficial.
- Ability to manage multiple tasks remotely, use common digital tools (e.g., email, shared documents, virtual meeting platforms), and maintain confidentiality.
