The Registered Nurse (RN) is responsible to perform a competent level of nursing care as demonstrated by the nursing process, including assessment, diagnosis, outcomes identification, planning, implementation, coordination of care, teaching, health promotion, and evaluation. The RN applies standards of professional performance such as ethics, culturally congruent practice, communication, collaboration, leadership, education, evidence-based practice, quality, resource utilization, and environmental health. The RN maintains clinical knowledge and skills to meet standards required by specific clinical areas.

Sentara Leigh Hospital ICU, AACN Gold Beacon Award recipient, comprises 20 licensed critical care beds with an average daily census of 18 patients. Staffing ratios vary from 1:1 to 1:3, with 1:2 as the usual assignment. ICU RNs provide critical care with ongoing education and skill validation supported by an experienced ICU CNS. The unit welcomes experienced nurses transitioning into critical care;

an 11-week Transition to Practice program supports orientation and skill development for IMC areas. ICU staff are supported by an interdisciplinary team including unit-based respiratory, physical, speech and occupational therapists; interpreter, nutrition, palliative, chaplaincy, and ethical services. The ICU has onsite and eICU pulmonary critical care intensivists and physician extenders 24/7. Physician-led, nurse-driven interdisciplinary rounds are held daily to ensure continuity of care and address nursing concerns.

• Degree or Diploma in Registered Nursing (required)
• Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) or Master of Science in Nursing (MSN) preferred

• Registered Nursing License (Required)
• BLS required within 90 days of hire
