NURSING SUPERVISOR (University Hospital, 4B1 Adult Medical‑Surgical Unit)

Responsibilities- Assist the Clinical Nursing Director on 4B1, 32‑bed Adult Medical‑Surgical Unit in planning and management of patient care services.
- Provide leadership in nursing practice, emphasizing quality patient care, education and research.
- Coordinate patient care services consistent with the University of Michigan Hospitals and Health Centers mission and goals.
- Collaborate/maintain consultative relationships with other health professionals and administrative personnel.
- Exercise administrative and functional supervision over nursing and support staff as delegated by the Clinical Nursing Director.
- Plan, assign, and supervise the work of nursing and support staff.
- Participate in interviewing, selecting, orienting, counseling, coaching, discipline and evaluation of staff.
- Develop, implement, and revise individual performance plans and maintain open communication channels with nursing directors, ACNOs, peers, staff and providers.
- Coach and mentor Charge Nurses, Staff Nurses, members of the Nursing Leadership Team and others.
- Rotate to off shifts as determined by staffing needs and the Clinical Nursing Director.
- Maintain presence rounding on patients, families and staff to ensure patient care excellence on all shifts.
- Participate in the development and implementation of unit or area goals and objectives.
- Identify and plan for staffing consistent with patient population needs and budgetary requirements.
- Participate in planning and problem solving of daily unit/area operations, prioritizing patient services and urgent care.
- Interpret and implement hospital and university policies, procedures and regulatory standards.
- Monitor department payroll and commodity expenditures and contribute to budget planning.
- Coordinate performance evaluation activities for unit staff as delegated by the Clinical Nursing Director.
- Collaborate with Clinical Nurse Specialist and/or Educational Nurse Coordinator to implement policies, procedures and standards of nursing care.
- Promote integration of research findings into clinical practice and staff involvement in clinical research.
- Participate in planning, coordinating and evaluating unit quality improvement activities.
- Bachelor of Science in Nursing or Associates degree (diploma) in Nursing and a Master’s degree in Nursing.
- Current licensure as a Registered Nurse in the State of Michigan.
- Minimum five (5) years RN experience.
- Minimum two (2) years of recent (within the last 5 years) RN experience in General Adult Medical‑Surgical.
- RN leadership certification or completion of a nurse leadership certification within two (2) years of accepting this position, e.g., Certified Nurse Manager and Leader (CNML) or Nurse Executive (NE‑BC), recognized by the Magnet Recognition Program and ANCC.
- Demonstrated leadership ability including charge nurse, team leader, professional development framework or other management experience.
- Two (2) years of recent general medical‑surgical RN experience.
- Unit committee membership.
- Knowledge of University of Michigan Hospitals and Health Center policies and practices.
- Excellent interpersonal and problem‑solving skills.
- Ability to assess, interpret, and analyze clinical information independently and collaboratively.
- Effective collaboration with clinical nursing director, supervisor, unit leadership, administrators, physicians, peers and subordinates.
- Computer competency including Word, Excel, and ability to extract data from University supported computer databases.
Hours per week: 40 hours/week. Shift: Evening and Night shift position. Requires flexibility to meet unit needs; all shifts and weekends may be required.
