Position Summary
The Prescription Refill Nurse is a critical member of our healthcare team, responsible for ensuring safe and timely renewal of patients' prescription medications. This role requires a Registered Nurse (RN) who is detail‑oriented and skilled in patient communication. The nurse will use clinical knowledge to accurately refill prescriptions, coordinate follow‑up appointments, and ensure comprehensive documentation and billing.
Location / Work ModelHybrid remote after onsite training and orientation. Nurses will perform duties both in-office and remotely based on operational needs.
Education- Associates of Science in Nursing (ASN) required.
- Current and valid Registered Nurse (RN) license in the state of practice.
- Basic Life Support (BLS) certification.
- Certification in Medication Administration or similar is a plus.
- Strong attention to detail and organizational skills.
- Excellent communication and patient interaction abilities.
- Proficiency in electronic medical records (EMR) systems.
- Ability to interpret and follow medical protocols and flow charts.
- Strong problem‑solving and decision‑making capabilities.
- Minimum of 2 years of clinical nursing experience preferred.
- Experience in a primary care or outpatient setting is advantageous.
- Prior experience with prescription management is a plus.
- Conduct thorough reviews of prescription refill requests from patients.
- Verify patient information and prescription details for accuracy.
- Utilize clinical judgment to determine the appropriateness of refills per established protocols.
- Collaborate with prescribing physicians to confirm or modify prescription orders as necessary.
- Follow proper procedure flow charts to ensure standardized refill processes.
- Communicate with patients regarding the status of their refill requests.
- Forward patients requiring appointments or laboratory tests to the appropriate location.
- Accurately document all refill activities in the electronic medical records, noting "refill sent per protocol."
- Address WEB encounter responses and document reasons for changes in prescriptions, such as switching to a Multum medication.
- Maintain confidentiality and comply with all regulations regarding patient information.
- Participate in continuous quality improvement initiatives related to medication refills.
- Engage in ongoing professional development to stay current with industry standards and best practices.
- Process medication prior authorizations by navigating complex insurance requirements.
- Efficiently handle the denial and appeal process.
- Manage a high‑volume workload within a timely manner.
