Overview

Louisiana Department of Public Safety & Corrections – Corrections Services, Dixon Correctional Institute, Jackson, LA. THIS POSITION WILL BE FILLED AS A PROBATIONAL APPOINTMENT or PROMOTION OF A PERMANENT CLASSIFIED EMPLOYEE OF LOUISIANA STATE GOVERNMENT (State Employee).

SALARY DEPENDENT ON QUALIFICATIONS. This position has a Special Entrance Rate at each level:
Practical Nurse-Licensed 1 SER $19.48/hour;
Practical Nurse-Licensed 2 SER $20.84/hour;
Practical Nurse-Licensed 3 SER $22.30/hour. Premium Pay is paid in addition to regular pay for qualifying conditions (Retention, Credentials, Experience, Shift Differential). There is Premium Pay at a rate up to $5.00 per hour for each hour worked based on years of service with DOC, in addition to regular pay.

Position details

Work setting: 24-hour facility in the Medical Department; tasks include Excel, word processing, purchasing and organization skills.
Location: Statewide health care facilities; correctional facilities.
Shift: Applicants may be required to work shift work.
Career progression: As part of a Career Progression Group, vacancies may be filled from Practical Nurse-Licensed 1, 2, or 3 depending on experience.

Responsibilities and duties (Function of Work)

Provide basic nursing care to patients/clients in stable conditions and predictable situations in accordance with the Professional Nurses Practice Act.

Operate at entry level with supervision from a Registered Nurse or higher level Practical Nurse.

May exercise functional supervision over paraprofessional nursing personnel.

Locate work statewide in health care facilities and correctional facilities.

Implement nursing care plans with progressively generalized supervision, including comfort, hygiene, safety, and nutrition.

Observe patients for changes in physical or mental status and report significant changes.

Obtain specimens for laboratory testing as assigned.

Take vital signs (temperature, pulse, respiration, and blood pressure).

Administer medications and treatments per policies and procedures.

Transcribe physicians’ orders and document patient conditions on charts and records.

Receive and give change of shift reports.

Request stock drugs, medications, and supplies as assigned.

Administer CPR in emergency situations.

Admit, transfer, and discharge patients.

Gather information about patient history and current condition.

May administer oral and parenteral medications as prescribed and document procedures.

Apply dressings, ointments, and other treatments as ordered and document procedures.

Assist physicians with routine examinations and treatment.

Bathe, feed, and comfort patients.

Perform individual and group health teaching as assigned.

Minimum qualifications

Possession of a current Louisiana Practical Nurse license, a temporary permit, or a multi-state license issued by a Nursing Licensure Compact (NLC/eNLC) state.
