Job SummaryThe Neurosurgery department is a multidisciplinary team of attending physicians, residents, and advanced practice providers (APPs) that care for patients with a broad range of neurological disorders, including brain and cranial tumors, vascular neurologic conditions, functional neurologic disorders, scoliosis, and neck and spine pain. APPs function independently within a large neurosurgical group, providing surgical consultations, pre‑operative and post‑operative care.
Responsibilities- Provide health care to predominantly neurosurgical spine patients and patients with scoliosis, vascular, cranial, functional neurologic, and brachial plexus/peripheral nerve conditions.
- Diagnose and treat neurosurgical patients, providing independent pre‑operative and post‑operative care in collaboration with the neurosurgical team.
- Complete new patient evaluations independently.
- Perform detailed history and physical examinations and comprehensive assessments of neurological conditions.
- Collaborate with attending neurosurgeons to present patient findings and formulate treatment plans.
- Order and interpret appropriate radiographic studies, and perform office procedures.
- Collect and assist in interpreting reports from diagnostic and laboratory tests, radiographic procedures, and clinical studies.
- Administer follow‑up care to patients and assist in referrals to internal and external facilities.
- Evaluate postoperative patients and perform routine follow‑up visits.
- Provide urgent same‑day office visits.
APPs receive medical supervision from the Neurosurgical Service Chief or a designee and administrative supervision from the APP Manager.
Required Qualifications – Nurse Practitioner- Current licensure to practice as a Registered Nurse and Nurse Practitioner specialty certification in the State of Michigan.
- Current specialty certification in Adult‑Gerontology Acute Care NP, FNP, AGPCNP, or ANP.
- Minimum two years of experience as an outpatient APP in a neurosurgical practice.
- Graduate of an accredited Nurse Practitioner program.
- Certification recognized by the National Council of State Boards of Nursing (NCSBN).
- Current DEA registration.
- BLS certification.
- Current license to practice as a Physician Assistant in the State of Michigan.
- Completion of a Physician Assistant program accredited by the Accreditation Review Commission on Education for the Physician Assistant (ARC‑PA) or one of its predecessor agencies.
- Certification by the National Commission on Certification for Physician Assistants (NCCPA).
- Minimum two years of experience as an outpatient APP in a neurosurgical practice.
- State of Michigan Controlled Substance License.
- Current DEA registration.
- BLS certification.
Employment is contingent upon successful completion of the credentialing and privileging process. Applicants must meet or will have met all required qualifications prior to the start date of employment.
Desired Qualifications- Two or more years of outpatient APP experience caring for surgical spine patients.
- Experience reviewing radiographic imaging related to the spine.
- APP experience functioning independently.
- Demonstrated ability to coordinate clinical care across multiple patient services and to communicate as a patient advocate.
- Ability to prioritize assignments and manage a busy work environment.
- Experience and/or interest in spine oncology preferred.
