Telephone Triage Nurse

Overview

Virginia Cancer Specialists, an affiliate of McKesson Specialty Health and US Oncology, seeks a full‑time Telephone Triage Nurse for the Advice Line team at our Cancer Center in Fairfax. The role may qualify for a remote work arrangement after six months of successful employment.

As an Advice Line Nurse, you will assess patient needs over the telephone, collaborate with physicians or qualified staff, and document all care interactions in the patient’s medical record. You must accurately identify patients with high‑risk conditions and direct care to appropriate resources. Under general supervision, you will provide professional nursing care that adheres to national and organizational standards and guidelines for specialty care and scope of practice per state licensing board, while recognizing physical, psychological, and spiritual aspects of care.

You will also participate in company‑wide quality initiatives, support and adhere to the US Oncology Compliance Program, and follow the Code of Ethics and Business Standards.

• Answer patient calls, portal messages, and emails in a timely manner.
• Ask appropriate open‑ended questions and use computerized algorithms/pathways to assess patient symptoms and manage side effects.
• Manage a wide range of symptoms.
• Assess the urgency of patient symptoms/side effects and address them appropriately.
• Aggressively manage symptoms to prevent unnecessary emergency department and hospital utilization.
• If emergency care is needed, collaborate with physicians via electronic communication, face‑to‑face, or telephone to discuss patient care needs that cannot be independently addressed using standard orders or protocols.
• Collaborate with providers if the patient can be seen in an outpatient clinic setting for their symptoms.
• Document all conversations with patients to maintain a comprehensive medical record.
• Provide clear instructions and education to patients via telephone and perform other duties as assigned.

Minimum

Job Qualifications:

• Graduate from an accredited professional nursing program; BSN preferred.
• RN state license and current registration with the State Board of Nursing in the practicing state.
• Current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification; must maintain continuing education requirements.
• 3 to 5 years nursing experience, including at least one year in oncology preferred.
• Oncology certification preferred.
