Job SummaryThe Principal Doctor is responsible for comprehensive oversight of veterinary care delivery, client service, staff well‑being, and overall hospital efficiency. The role ensures that the practice delivers top‑quality medical care and provides an engaging environment for both clients and staff.
Key Responsibilities- Maintain high‑quality care and exceptional client service.
- Partner with the Practice Manager to support hospital operations.
- Lead and/or participate in hospital team meetings.
- Develop annual plans, budgets, and productivity goals.
- Lead talent acquisition, training, development, coaching, and mentoring of staff.
- Implement effective communication strategies to foster employee engagement.
- Maximize hospital efficiency, profitability, and productivity.
- Resolve client and employee conflicts effectively.
- Ensure all employees maintain current licensure.
- Support and mentor Associate Doctors in clinical care and business performance.
- Guide Associates to reach professional goals and develop plans.
- Ensure proficiency in anesthesia, surgery, dentistry, and current practices.
- Coordinate scheduling of veterinarians and parateam with both client needs and staff development.
- Oversee training of employees in client service, Well Haven protocols, and practice priorities.
- Practice veterinary medicine in compliance with the State Veterinary Practice Act, federal and state controlled‑substance laws, Well Haven Code of Ethics, and all regulatory requirements.
- Maintain accurate medical charts and meet quality control standards.
- Achieve safety compliance with OSHA, DEA, and company policies.
- Demonstrate unwavering integrity and ethical conduct in all actions.
- Lead community outreach, events, and external marketing efforts.
- Provide professional, efficient, and exceptional service to clients.
- Communicate clearly and organize interactions with veterinary team and clients.
- Adapt to individual client needs and resolve complaints when appropriate.
- Guide the team to meet safety standards set by DEA and OSHA.
- Perform additional duties as assigned.
- Uphold integrity and ethics.
- Coaching and mentoring of direct reports.
- Keep current with veterinary advancements via ongoing education.
- Resolve conflicts professionally.
- Drive results, demonstrate motivation and determination.
- Provide consistent, high‑quality care.

- Learn new computer software systems.
- High accountability.
- Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM/VMD) or equivalent.
- State Veterinary Board License.
- Good standing in the first day of employment.
- Valid DEA license upon hire.
- Hospital or practice ownership or equivalent management experience.
- 5+ years practicing as a DVM in a hospital setting.
- Prior experience training associate doctors and paraprofessional staff.
Physical Requirements
- Onsite hospital or approved offsite event location; remote work not available.
- Hospital environment includes limited space, pet waste odors, and noise.
- Requires 40+ hours per week; schedules may include 10+ hour shifts, Saturdays, evenings, and holidays.
- Must stand, walk, stoop, kneel, crouch, and climb.
- Requires good hand‑eye coordination, dexterity, and visual acuity.
- Ability to lift 50+ pounds.
- May be exposed to pets that may bite or scratch, biological hazards, anesthesia medications, radiation, prescription medications, and controlled substances.
$130,000 - $175,000 + Production + Principal Doctor Bonus
