Description

Jefferson County Open Space is currently hiring Trails Technician I for a unique role. The Trails Technician I is responsible for entry‑level labor and semi‑skilled activities related to the construction, maintenance, and stewardship of the open‑space trails system and related infrastructure while receiving training on methods and techniques.

The mission of Jefferson County Open Space is to preserve open space and parkland, protect park and natural resources, and provide healthy nature‑based experiences.

Schedule

The position operates on a four‑day work week (Monday‑Thursday, 7:00am – 5:30pm).

Compensation

The anticipated hiring range is $25.00–$27.00 USD per hour. Compensation will be determined based on education, experience, and skills.

Essential Duties
  • Construct trails using hand tools, power tools, and heavy equipment.
  • Maintain trails, install erosion control devices, and inspect the trail system.
  • Control vegetation, construct stairs, tie walls, and fencing; assist in field supervision of LTEs, Trail Stewardship Team field crews, and Volunteer Program.
  • Train and assist in construction, repair, and maintenance of trails and related infrastructure. Manually excavate trails and lay aggregate and stone.
  • Train in building trail features such as small bridges and stairs using timber, wood, stone, and aggregate.
  • Train and assist in maintenance and repair of trails and related infrastructure; conduct inspections of trails.
  • May provide oversight of limited, seasonal, and volunteer workers at worksite locations.
  • Interact with the public to communicate and provide education on trail use and regulations; practice principles and practices of trail stewardship.
  • Perform snow removal activities using hand tools and power equipment.
  • Other duties as assigned.
Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications
  • Education:

    High School Diploma or equivalent certificate.
  • Experience:

    None.
Preferred Knowledge,

Skills and Abilities
  • One or more years of specific trail maintenance/construction.
  • Experience with natural resources and/or instruction.
  • Additional coursework in Natural Resource Management, Outdoor Recreation, Park Maintenance, or related field.
Additional Job Information
  • Must be physically able to operate a variety of machinery and equipment, including skid steer, roller/compactor, water pump, chainsaw, and hand and power tools; able to exert up to 100 pounds of force occasionally, 50 pounds frequently, or 25 pounds constantly.
  • Criminal history and MVR background checks required for every position.
  • Valid Colorado driver’s license required for positions that drive on County Business in either a county or personal vehicle within 30 days of hire or for interns/volunteers.
