Marine Maintenance Technician

Specifically, RIDEM Division of Marine Fisheries and Division of Fish and Wildlife are seeking applicants to help in maintaining and operating marine vessels dedicated toward resource monitoring surveys used for informing fish and wildlife sustainability. The applicant will be expected to perform and/or assist with seasonal and annual scheduled maintenance, diagnosis, and repairs on a fleet of vessels and associated trailers operated by the two Divisions.

Vessels include several large and small survey vessels, ranging from 14 to 50 feet in length. These survey vessels operate in both fresh and marine water environments, can operate outside of scheduled work hours, and employ varying gear types including otter trawls, clam dredge, fish and lobster pots, seine nets, SCUBA support, electroshocking, and waterfowl assessment. Maintenance or repairs on associated gear (e.g. electrofishing boat electrical generator and water pump, net mending) may also be required.

Propulsion systems for the vessels range from diesel to outboard engines, and the applicant will be expected to have a working knowledge and or technical understanding of survey vessel systems including hydraulics and electronics. If maintenance and repairs are outside of the scope and ability of the vessel staff, the applicant will be responsible for the scheduling the completion of maintenance or repairs from an accepted vendor.

Applicant will be expected to have the ability to troubleshoot problems as they relate to the above duties.

The applicant will prepare and maintain forms and records documenting maintenance and repairs on vessels and associated equipment owned by the Department. The applicant will be responsible for the care, maintenance, repair, and security of state vehicle fleet and may assist in the maintenance of other facilities or assets that support the resources surveys. It is preferred that the applicant has knowledge in the field of fisheries and wildlife science and/or management, with the ability to assist biological staff in a wide array of surveys and other duties as necessary.

The applicant may also be asked to assist the Divisions in the management and maintenance of properties and access points managed by the Department.

Technical training gained through an accredited marine maintenance program or college. A thorough working knowledge of the operation, maintenance and repair of powered marine vessels; a thorough working knowledge and understanding of marine propulsion and marine auxiliary systems; a thorough working knowledge of the maintenance and operation of inboard and outboard diesel and gasoline powered engines; a thorough working knowledge of marine and US Coast Guard regulations for vessel operation and navigation;

a thorough knowledge of all current navigational equipment. A working knowledge of marine safety requirements; the ability to communicate and coordinate with subordinates and others orally and with written communications; a working knowledge of physical activity associated with marine fisheries research projects. Or any combination of education and experience that shall be substantially equivalent to the above education and experience.

The applicant will be expected to manage multiple projects at once, operate independently and work with a diverse group of people toward resource management program goals. The applicant must possess license to operate motor vehicle at the time of employment. A United States Coast Guard O.U.P.V "six pack" Captain's License and/or additional tonnage licenses are desirable, but not required. Must be eligible to work in the United States.

The Marine Maintenance Technician's home office will be with the Division of Marine Fisheries located in Jamestown, Rhode Island; however, given the applicant will be expected to spend time at the Division of Fish and Wildlife's main office in West Kingston, Rhode Island. Work will be performed in both office and field settings, which may include working in variable weather conditions, at remote locations in and on the water, and under physically demanding circumstances.

The applicant will work under the direct supervision of the Vessel Captain and Supervising Biologist, or equivalent supervisory staff.

This position is a full-time contract that is expected to last indefinitely based on performance and funding. This position is not qualified for overtime. Compensatory time and flexible working hours (with supervisory approval) are available under the Commission's policies; however, the position is a salaried employee, and is expected to work eight (8) hours/day, five (5) days/week.
