What Your Job Will Be LikeWe are seeking a postdoctoral researcher to work on the development and applications of scanning electron microscopy techniques for functional characterization of electronic materials and devices. The department currently has two customized microscopes with unique capabilities that include electron beam induced current, cathodoluminescence, scanning ultrafast electron microscopy, and electron plume imaging. The candidate should be self‑motivated, able to work independently, and contribute creatively to team efforts.
The candidate will be expected to present results at national/international meetings and publish research in high profile peer‑reviewed journals.
On any given day, you may be called on to:
- Conduct experiments using state‑of‑the‑art characterization instrumentation
- Analyze data using established and custom modeling tools
- Introduce new capabilities by integrating custom hardware
- Present research progress at group meetings, peer review events, and technical conferences
- Write and publish manuscripts in scientific journals
Due to the nature of the work, the selected applicant must be able to work onsite.
Qualifications We Require- PhD degree in physics, electrical engineering, materials science, chemistry, or a closely related field
- Hands‑on experience with electron sources and their application to semiconductor characterization
- A record of publications in peer‑reviewed journals and presentations at scientific conferences, consisting of a minimum of three (3) first‑author or co‑authored scientific publications
- Highest degree received not more than five years prior to the date of application and all degree requirements completed before starting the appointment
- Ability to obtain and maintain a DOE Q‑level security clearance
- Experience with operando electronic device characterization
- Experience with data acquisition hardware and software
- Experience with finite element modeling
The Materials Physics department performs fundamental research on the structure and properties of materials to support programs in energy research, device physics, materials reliability, and national security. Specific activities include experimental and modeling studies of surface electronic structure and surface atomic structure and dynamics of metals, oxides, low dimensional semiconductors, and adsorbates; atomic‑scale structure and composition analysis of metals, semiconductors, and composites;
electrical and optical properties of low‑dimensional semiconductors and optoelectronic devices; and the structural and electrochemical characterization of solid‑state ionic materials. The Department supports internal and external sponsors and government agencies that seek solutions to problems of fundamental scientific inquiry, energy sustainability, and national security.
This posting will be open for application submissions for a minimum of seven (7) calendar days, including the ‘posting date’. Sandia reserves the right to extend the posting date at any time.
