Discover Your Career at Emory University Emory University is a leading research university that fosters excellence and attracts world-class talent to innovate today and prepare leaders for the future. We welcome candidates who can contribute to the excellence of our academic community.

Description I am searching for a full‑time postdoctoral scholar to join my lab at the Emory Eye Center in Atlanta, Georgia! This position is well‑suited to candidates with an enthusiastic interest in bioenergetics. We use mass spectrometry‑based metabolomics and stable isotope tracing to understand the metabolic paths that are most active in the retina and retinal pigment epithelium. Our goal is to determine the extent to which changes in energy metabolism (glycolysis, mitochondrial function, etc.)

cause retinal degeneration in mouse models of retinitis pigmentosa and age‑related macular degeneration. We hope to distinguish ourselves by providing the field with quantitative measures of metabolic function and expanding upon the energetic pathways that are assessed in disease states. I am a new member of the faculty at the Emory Eye Center and my lab is small. Joining me would mean a lot of one‑on‑one access, firsthand exposure to the early stages of a new academic lab, access to a brand new LC‑MS/MS system, and a mentor who is invested in your success.

You would also join a wonderful, well‑resourced department with deep experience in the generation of novel mouse models, electrophysiological approaches, and a very strong track record of supporting the careers of postdoctoral scholars. In my lab, you would be responsible for performing a combination of experiments intended to probe the structure, function, and metabolic traits of the eye. Techniques you would use include but are not limited to, electroretinography, optical coherence tomography, and metabolomics.

Requirements
  • Enthusiasm, motivation, and creativity
  • A doctoral degree in biological science (Ph.D. or MD/Ph.D.)
  • Ability to work and troubleshoot independently
  • Previous experience with mice
  • Ability to make at least a 2‑year commitment
  • Preferred – experience dissecting retinas from mouse eyes
  • Preferred – experience with mass spectrometry

In the cover letter of your application, please describe your academic background, reason(s) for seeking this position, and long‑term career goals. Please include three references!
