This is a hybrid position with a combination of onsite and remote work.

DESCRIPTION

The Remote Sensing and Atmospheric Scientist ("Scientist"), working closely with the leads for AQPI, Precipitation Science and Prediction, Modeling and Data Assimilation, and Verification, will foster collaboration, lead research projects, and contribute to proposal development across groups at CW3E and with external collaborators.

The Scientist conducts and manages research related to remote sensing of precipitation, with a focus on weather radar, particularly the Advanced Quantitative Precipitation Information (AQPI) network and related systems coming online. This research improves precipitation estimation, informs development of radar mosaics, supports model validation, and leads to new observational strategies. In particular, the scientist will use polarimetric radar data and process-based knowledge to develop new methods for rain rate estimation including attenuation correction, bright band identification, and mosaic approaches related to the AQPI radar network.

The scientist performs evaluations of radar performance vs additional observational data sets such as other radar networks, rain gauges, and more, using their knowledge of meteorology to propose theories for results and suggestions for improvement. Additional research outcomes include informing model development as it relates to remote sensing of precipitation intensity, precipitation type, and key physical processes. Research involves the manipulation of large numerical weather modeling output and observations, including CW3E's West-WRF model and field/radar observations, to identify sources of radar and model errors that could be improved.

The Scientist may provide expertise and leadership in the development of state-of-the-art modeling systems, both deterministic and ensembles, and contribute to research and real-time modeling operations, particularly now casting. In addition, coordinates and manages remote sensing- and precipitation-related projects and tasks as requested under the California Atmospheric Rivers Program and Forecast Informed Reservoir Operations Program at CW3E in collaboration with other Group Leads and FIRO Project Managers.

Leverages experience in data analysis and stakeholder engagement to strategically contribute to development and maintenance of products and tools featured on the CW3E website. Provides input to management for strategic growth of research efforts, computing platforms and resources, ongoing efforts to improve data management procedures, and optimization of models and programs on current servers.

The Scientist communicates research results via conference presentations, scientific publications, and technical reports, as well as non-technical interactions such as engagement with sponsors, stakeholders, and communities. Finally, the Scientist is committed to supporting staff growth, mentorship and training of early-career scientists and post-doctoral scholars, and highly collaborative work environments.

QUALIFICATIONS
  • Graduate degree in atmospheric sciences or related field proffered but not required.

  • Thorough knowledge of research function. Extensive experience as an independent researcher in areas of meteorology, hydrometeorology, or remote sensing as it pertains to the study of weather radar observation, analysis, and algorithm development.

  • Thorough skills associated with statistical analysis and systems programming. Experience in scientific programming including, but not limited to, Python, MATLAB, NCL and other common programming languages or mapping software in geoscience (e.g., ArcGIS/QGIS). Familiarity with and experience in analyzing gridded meteorological data (e.g., GRIB, NetCDF, etc).

  • Knowledge of short-term forecast models and now casting approaches. Knowledge of observational data sources as they relate to weather radar technology and application.

  • Thorough skills in analysis and consultation. Demonstrated subject matter expertise in remote sensing including weather radar technology, interpretation, and application, as well as methods of converting raw data into useful information (e.g., rain rates).
