DescriptionThe NASA Postdoctoral Program (NPP) offers unique research opportunities to highly-talented scientists to engage in ongoing NASA research projects at a NASA Center, NASA Headquarters, or at a NASA-affiliated research institute. These one‑to‑three year fellowships are competitive and are designed to advance NASA’s missions in space science, Earth science, aeronautics, space operations, exploration systems, and astrobiology.
This opportunity is closed to applicants who are Senior Fellows (5 years or more past PhD). Theoretical and experimental research is under way in atmospheric science, radiative transfer, and remote sensing. This research focuses on:
- Remote sensing of aerosols and clouds.
- Atmospheric correction of satellite imagery of the Earth's surface.
- Interaction of aerosols and clouds, and their climatic impact.
- Remote sensing of emissions from biomass burning in the tropics.
- Calibration of satellite sensors using the Earth's atmosphere and surface reflectance.
- Analysis of satellite data.
Field experiments are conducted with measurements from aircraft and from the ground of the aerosol properties (e.g., smoke aerosol, dust, and anthropogenic aerosol), and their effect on cloud microphysics and radiation characteristics.
