Position specifics

The Center for Language Science (CLS) in the College of the Liberal Arts at Penn State seeks a Human Research Technologist to assist in the design and execution of the research of the labs within CLS.

The CLS is an interdisciplinary group of linguists, psycho linguists, applied linguists, speech-language pathologists, speech scientists, and cognitive neuroscientists who share an interest in linguistics, language acquisition, and bilingualism.

CLS researchers employ a variety of methods including behavioral measures, eye tracking, electrophysiological methods (EEG/ERP), and fMRI.

One of the main responsibilities of the Human Research Technologist will be to assist with CLS faculty research. This will involve (but is not limited to) recruiting and testing participants using the above methods, as well as data processing and analysis.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Managing the laboratory operations (including oversight of equipment maintenance and research supplies, and participant scheduling)
  • Providing technical support for students and faculty
  • Providing general support for the CLS, including promotion and knowledge sharing of ongoing research and studies in the lab and coordinating multiple researchers' schedules
  • Assist with public engagement activities (e.g., creating materials and delivering workshops and activities)
  • Recruiting and training undergraduate research assistants

The Human Research Technologist will also be allotted time for professional development activities.

Qualifications
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
  • Outstanding organizational skills
  • Ability to manage multiple simultaneous projects
  • Training and experience with at least one research-related technical method (e.g., eye tracking, EEG/ERP, acoustic analysis in Praat)
  • Previous hands‑on research experience in language science

Additional training will be provided for technical methods and for conducting research with human participants.

Associate Degree. No prior relevant work experience required; previous relevant work experience accepted in lieu of education. Required
