Job Overview

The Institute for Health Metrics and Evaluation (IHME) is an independent research organization at the University of Washington (UW) focused on delivering timely, relevant, and scientifically valid evidence to improve health policy and practice. IHME conducts research across areas such as the Global Burden of Diseases, injuries, risk factors, future health scenarios, cost effectiveness, resource tracking, and impact evaluations.

IHME offers an exciting opportunity for a Researcher on the Integrated Analytics team. Researchers analyze quantitative data—including causes of death, epidemiology, and determinants such as education and income—from surveys, vital registration, censuses, literature, registries, and administrative records. Using established modeling tools and novel code, Researchers incorporate relevant data to produce up‑to‑date, scientifically credible results.

Researchers work closely with data and research professionals, external collaborators, and cross‑disciplinary team members to critique, improve, and disseminate findings. Effective communication with diverse partners and concise presentation of complex concepts are essential. Researchers are key members of dynamic, agile teams. This position is contingent on project funding.

Responsibilities
  • Develop a core understanding of assigned research area methodology and its components.

  • Lead discussion in research meetings about results and analyses to vet, improve, and finalize outcomes.
  • Contribute to presentations, manuscripts, and funding proposals; coauthor scientific publications in peer‑reviewed journals.
  • Maintain scientific awareness and intellectual agility with data, methods, and analytic techniques.
  • Perform other duties within reasonable scope of the research team.
Minimum Qualifications
  • Master’s Degree in Public Health, Epidemiology, Statistics, Biostatistics, Mathematics, Economics, Quantitative Social Sciences, or related field and one year of related work experience.
  • Equivalent education and/or experience may substitute for minimum qualifications except when legal requirements exist.
Additional Qualifications
  • Proven interest and experience in GBD or forecasting modeling areas and related data sources and scientific underpinnings.
  • Strong analytic, critical thinking, and quantitative skills.
  • Professional communication and collaboration with staff at all levels to achieve team goals.

  • Proficiency with at least one statistical programming language such as R or Python.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively.
  • Long‑term interest in a research scientist position contributing to IHME’s mission.
Desired Qualifications
  • Track record of successful co‑authorship on scientific papers, presenting results, and representing research at meetings.
  • Knowledge of machine learning, data mining, and analytic techniques.
Conditions of Employment
  • Weekend and evening work sometimes required.
  • Position open to anyone authorized to work in the US.
  • International work only allowed for IHME‑sponsored projects requiring in‑country participation.
  • Office located in Seattle, Washington; position eligible for fully remote work in the US. Work schedule must overlap 100% of IHME office hours, between 8 a.m. and 6 p.m. Pacific Time.
