* ** JOB DESCRIPTION AND POSITION REQUIREMENTS
** We are seeking a motivated undergraduate student in Mechanical Engineering for a National Science Foundation (NSF) funded summer research internship focused on developing computational models of the human postural system. This position offers hands-on experience in biomechanics, controls, and sensory integration research.
** Project Description
** The intern will develop a dynamic model of human postural control using MATLAB and Simulink, incorporating multiple sensory feedback mechanisms including visual, somatosensory (proprioceptive and tactile), and vestibular inputs. This work will contribute to our understanding of how the human body maintains balance and stability through multisensory integration. The intern will work closely with Principal Investigator Dr. Tarkesh Singh and a graduate student mentor throughout the project.
** Key Responsibilities
*** Develop and implement dynamic models of the human postural system in MATLAB/Simulink
* Integrate visual, somatosensory, and vestibular sensory feedback pathways into the control model
* Conduct simulations to analyze postural responses under various conditions
* Validate model predictions against existing experimental data
* Document modeling approaches, assumptions, and results
* Participate in regular research meetings and present progress updates
* Contribute to technical reports and potential conference presentations
** Required Qualifications
*** Currently enrolled as an undergraduate student in Mechanical Engineering
* Successful completion of ME 450 with a grade of B+ or higher
* Proficiency in MATLAB and Simulink
* Strong foundation in dynamics, controls, and differential equations
* Excellent problem-solving and analytical skills
** Preferred Qualifications
*** Coursework or interest in biomechanics, physiology, or neuroscience
* Experience with control systems design and analysis
* Familiarity with scientific literature review and technical writing
* Self-motivated with strong organizational skills
** Mentorship
* * The intern will receive direct supervision and mentorship from Dr. Tarkesh Singh and will collaborate closely with a graduate student researcher, providing an excellent opportunity to learn research methodologies and gain experience in an academic research environment.
** Duration and Commitment
** Summer 2026 (approximately 10-12 weeks) at $16/hour.
** To Apply
** Please submit a resume, unofficial transcript, and brief statement of interest describing your relevant experience and motivation for this position.
** BACKGROUND CHECKS/CLEARANCES
** Employment with the University will require successful completion of background check(s) in accordance with University policies.
** CAMPUS SECURITY CRIME STATISTICS
** Pursuant to the Jeanne Clery Disclosure of Campus Security Policy and Campus Crime Statistics Act and the Pennsylvania Act of 1988, Penn State publishes a combined Annual Security and Annual Fire Safety Report (ASR). The ASR includes crime statistics and institutional policies concerning campus security, such as those concerning alcohol and drug use, crime prevention, the reporting of crimes, sexual assault, and other matters.
The ASR is available for review .
