Description

About the NASA Postdoctoral Program The NASA Postdoctoral Program (NPP) offers unique research opportunities to highly-talented scientists to engage in ongoing NASA research projects at a NASA Center, NASA Headquarters, or at a NASA-affiliated research institute. These one- to three-year fellowships are competitive and are designed to advance NASA’s missions in space science, Earth science, aeronautics, space operations, exploration systems, and astrobiology.

The NASA Short-term Prediction Research and Transition (SPoRT) Center at Marshall Space Flight Center is an end-to-end research-to-applications/application-to-research project with a focus in innovating tailored products and capabilities that meet user needs to support decision-making. With a focus on user-centered research, SPoRT aims to advance the understanding of the weather, air quality or hydrology for amplifying the state of the art and benefit of NASA Earth Science missions, models, and capabilities for societal benefit - ultimately translating Earth Science to Action.

SPoRT focuses on new and recently launched NASA Earth Science missions (e.g. TEMPO, PACE), the constellation of Geostationary satellites (e.g., GOES-R series), passive microwave (e.g., GPM, TROPICS) and satellite sounding (SNPP, JPSS series), NASA or community models related to weather, chemistry, land surface, or wildfires, and the Prithvi Foundation Model.

Available NPP opportunities with NASA SPoRT include:

  • Exploration to advance use of foundation models for Earth Science research and applications, including fine-tuning experiments
  • Use of remote sensing, models, and/or machine learning to further our understanding of processes related to air quality and human health
  • Advancing our understanding of extreme events related to precipitation, hurricanes, atmospheric rivers, and associated impacts through remote sensing, models, and/or machine learning
  • Linking processes across the Earth System especially those involving planetary boundary layer processes including those that involve aerosols, lightning, or land/sea surface interactions

The prospective applicant should contact Emily Berndt (emily.b.berndt) well in advance of developing the proposal to ensure alignment of the idea with opportunity objectives. Please include a Curriculum Vitae (CV) and a brief statement of interest that identifies the primary topic of interest from those listed above. Other related topics will also be considered. The candidate will then be put in touch with the appropriate research mentor who will coordinate with the candidate on the proposal concept.
