Overview
The Institute for Health Metrics and Evaluation (IHME) is an independent research organization at the University of Washington (UW) that delivers timely, relevant, and scientifically valid evidence to improve health policy and practice. IHME works across global health research areas including the Global Burden of Diseases (GBD), injuries, risk factors, future health scenarios, cost‑effectiveness, resource tracking, and impact evaluations.
PositionTemporary Researcher – Gender Equality Metrics Team
Responsibilities- Develop core understanding of assigned research area methodology.
- Conduct quantitative analyses and statistical modeling under guidance of a scientist/faculty.
- Extract, format, transform, review, and assess data from multiple sources.
- Review, assess, and improve results and methods.
- Apply computational and statistical tools for preprocessing, analysis, and visualization.
- Document code and analytic approaches so analyses can be replicated.
- Lead discussion in research meetings about results and analyses to vet, improve, and finalize.
- Contribute to presentations, manuscripts, and funding proposals; co‑author scientific publications.
- Maintain scientific awareness and intellectual agility with data, methods, and analytic techniques.
- Perform other duties within reasonable scope of the research team.
- Master’s degree in public health, epidemiology, statistics, biostatistics, mathematics, economics, quantitative social sciences, or related discipline plus at least one year of experience with statistical modeling and quantitative analysis.
- Equivalent education and/or experience may substitute unless legal requirements apply.
- Experience or research with gender‑based violence work.
- Interest and experience in a disease, risk, key indicator, methodological area, and related data sources.
- Strong analytic, critical‑thinking, and quantitative skills.
- Ability to communicate and work with staff at all levels to achieve team goals.
- Results and detail oriented; ability to initiate and complete tasks under tight deadlines and changing priorities, both independently and in a team.
- Working ability with at least one statistical programming language including R.
- Excellent oral and written communication skills.
- Ability to work independently and collaboratively.
- Long‑term interest in a research scientist position contributing to the overall mission.
- Track record of co‑authorship on scientific papers and presenting results.
- Knowledge of machine learning, data mining, and analytic techniques.
- Weekend and evening work may be required.
- Open to anyone authorized to work in the US.
- International work only allowed for IHME sponsored work requiring in‑country participation.
- Office is located in Seattle, Washington; position eligible for full remote work in the US with required overlap of 50% IHME office hours (8 a.m. – 6 p.m. Pacific Time).
